How about adding Superdawg to the list being considered?  I like the dogs and love the fries.  It is a drive in but I think they have picnic benches too.
I love Poochies since they have moved are they in a larger location?  I feel like I've eaten there but my mind is a blank about the size.  Hmmmm eating good hot dogs takes all my concentration.  :)

If I am able to Join in it would be for Saturday and Sunday only. I'll likely be traveling En Route from Either Nebraska or Iowa or even Wisconsin on Friday. I'm still waiting for Southwest to post their May fares to Milwaukee

So the spreadsheet draws you out of cover....

CTD,
Understood regarding your time constraints.  We've got plenty of time to plan for this event.  Maybe a lunch at Uncle Bub's sometime after the New Year to compare notes and share ideas.

wanderingjew,
That's the kind of positive thinking that's going to bring you to Chicago next May, even if it's only for Saturday and Sunday.

buffetbuster,
It's a comfort knowing you'll be there to pick up any unfinished scraps.  BTW, by the time this event rolls around, Chicago could be home to it's first Graeter's Ice Cream Shop.  They were scouting locations this summer and could be open by next May.  Get a few pints to go and we could be talking Pie ala Mode ala Trunk!

FYI the Brewers and Cubs are playing in Chicago May 1-3, in case that might be a factor when it comes to figuring out possible high-traffic areas to avoid.

Why waste your time with coffee when you can start your day with a steaming cup of Italian beef gravy?

Graeter's, that that would be the ice cream on top of the hot dog, to mangle an old phrase... I truly love their ice cream.

If you're willing to drink coffee from a paper (cardboard, plastic) cup why not get your coffee from McDonald's?

On the research front, Mrs. Roadhouse and I made a field trip this evening to one of our Italian Beef candidates.

Jay's has three locations around the northwest side.  We visited the original location on Narragansett.  We ordered one Italian Beef (dipped twice, hot peppers on the side), a Burger with everything (no lettuce), and an order of Fries.  The Beef was quite good.  Thinly shaved beef, very moist, and a solid beefy flavor.

It might sound superfluous to say that, but if you'll recall, my last research stop at Buona Beef yielded a very different experience.  The gravy at Buona had a pronounced herbal quality that dominated the flavor of the meat.  Not in a bad way, but not at all like the flavors at Jay's.  The gravy at Jay's upheld the flavor of the beef and didn't overwhelm it.   This doesn't mean Buona is off the list.  I may keep them there just as a contrast to the other Beef Joints we visit.

BTW, the Giardinera was clearly house-made with fresh jalapenos.  It was dangerous looking.  Mrs. Roadhouse was the brave one who put a few chunks on her half of the sandwich.  She said it was as hot as it looked, but pretty good flavor.

The Fries were frozen Sysco spuds, totally worth skipping if Jay's makes the cut.  The Burger was a pretty good non-chain, fast food version with a decent flame grilled flavor.  Definitely not the reason to visit Jay's. However, on the way out I spotted the counter guy prepping a pretty awesome looking Meatball Sandwich for another customer.  If we go to Jay's it might be worth picking one up and passing it around the group.

cookielover3,
Although I've been a customer since I was in high school, I hadn't even considered Superdawg for this tour.  I have great respect for the business they've built over many decades, and it is certainly a fun place to visit.  But I'm looking for something different in the types of places I'm considering for this crawl.  I'm not even sure how to explain it, but I'll know it when I see it (I'll buy a Hot Dog for the first person who can identify the speaker and the circumstances for that freedom of speech reference).

In spite of Superdawg's omission from the tour, I hope you're planning to join the group next May.

Poverty Pete is the big winner (or in this case, is it Wiener?)!

Pete, you'll need to join the the GCHDAIBC next year to collect your winnings.  Or you could wait until the next time I pass through Nashville.  Thing is, do they have any good Hot Dogs in Nashville?

I was thinking it would be a fun challenge to take a shot of whiskey for every food item that the CTD orders while we are on the crawl. How many cases of liquor will be needed per person to complete this challenge?
