Hmm. Let me see. A 5 1/2 hour drive from Gahanna. We might make it in time for dinner. Are there any places to get something to eat in the Chicago area?

We roll up the streets around here pretty early to accommodate the overnight cattle drives that come through town.  My normal timetable is dinner at 4:30, watch the evening news, followed by a warm glass of milk, then off to bed before the sound of mooing bovines comes clomping down my street.

Or see below.

That's the quandry for the Thursday night welcome dinner versus the Sunday farewell lunch.

Because it's a very small restaurant, Burt doesn't like to take on groups of more than 12-14 people during regular business hours.  So, if the number of interested Roadfooders falls into that range we could have Thursday night's dinner there.  On the other hand, if the number exceeds 14, we could still have a private party there on Sunday, before he opens for business, starting around 11am-noon and running until 2:00 or 3:00pm.

Either way, the short answer to your question is, "I'm gonna try real hard to make that happen."

Thanks Buddy!  Thursday night would be fun but if there are too many of us......well, you know, it is Chicago and accidents do happen.  " />

ChickenDude,

The two "official" days of the tour are May 1st and 2nd.  Friday, May 1st will be a joint effort between ChiTownDiner and myself.  It will feature a selection of "Best Of..." spots around town that are unrelated to either CSDs or Italian Beef Sandwiches.  Those choices are still being narrowed down to a manageable number.  CTD and I are meeting this Friday to bat around some ideas and whittle down the selections to those that will best showcase our hometown.

Saturday, May 2nd will focus on Chicagostyle Hot Dogs and Italian Beef Sandwiches.  There may me a stop or two for Pie, Frozen Custard, Ice Cream or Italian Ice.  I'm also looking for a non-eating stop or two to break up the day and help us walk off some calories in between the good stuff.

On either side of those days (Thursday, April 30th and Sunday, May 3rd) we'll see many people coming into and leaving town.  As such, I'm planning a welcome dinner (time and location TBD) for all interested parties on Thursday, and a farewell brunch/lunch on Sunday.  This more or less reflects the timetable we experienced at last year's Cincinnati Chili Crawl.  We recognize that not everyone will be able to attend every event, but want to stress that all are welcome to participate as much as they wish.

Further, I encourage members of The Contingent to join us in welcoming our out of town visitors at as many of these events as possible.

Buddy

Spoke to ChiTownDiner several times this week and I will definitely be there.  Flights are still cheap, so this is a good time to jump on that.  I will try to get cousin Johnny there, too, but flights from BWI to Chicago are much more expensive for some reason.  We will keep an eye on it.

This is another good hotel -
super nice that Frank and I have personally stayed at in the Des Plaines-Mount Prospect area
For May 1-3 it is showing at $103, and would likely be less with AAA or AARP.
some folks might have Hilton points to stay on also.
They are within about a 30 sec walk of a restaurant called e + o that has excellent food in "small plates" style  http://www.eofoodanddrink.com/

They have done package deals with e+o in the past, so they might do group rates also....
