The Joy of Being Retired
Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went downtown and went into a shop. I was only in there for about 5 minutes and when I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. I went up to him and said, Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a break"? He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a "Nazi." He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires. So I called him a "doughnut eating Gestapo." He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Personally, I didn't care. I came downtown on the bus, and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said "Hillary in '08."

I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important to my health.

Yup, I've seen that joke traveling on the internet.

            It's still damned funny, though.

Mr. Chips, in a sick sort of way, I sorta hope your presidential candidate of preference, Bill Richardson, gets the nod. At least we New Mexicans will be able to get rid of him.

I was going to cuss sizz for doing that to my car but I knew you all would see through that too. There is absolutely no way I would have a "Hillary in '08" bumper sticker.

I like the front bumper stickers that say Run, Hillary. Run.

I just got that bumper sticker joke from a friend this morning. Dems put it on the back bumper while the repubs but it on front.

Personally I think that Hill is the best thing the Repubs have going for them.

I'm a Democrat, but that "Run, Hillary. Run" on the front bumper is a funny funny idea.

                            So very Forrest Gump.

This may be a bit off subject, but as I read this a thought occured to me......... what if the unspeakable happens and Hillary actually becomes president...upon completion of her term(s) in office, where will they put her presidential library? Surely she wouldn't have the gaul to have it put in NY............ya think maybe they would just turn Bill's trailer into a double-wide down in Little Rock?

                              Food for thought!

D'dog, I cracked up on that one! Having spent the better part of 8 months in a gated retirement park, I sure know what a double wide is! I vote that Hillary should stick with the double wide.

Retirement sucks and please believe me. I did it for a few months and it did nothing for me. I could only stand a few months of watching birds, drinking, smoking and whatever.

Fortunately I am now consulting and doing something that I can contribute.

Folks, retirement is nothing more than waiting to die.

I beg to differ. It depends on one's outlook and interests. I think retirement is great in that I can do what I want. Right now, I am helping out with my grandchildren and love it and love watching them develop. I am not waiting to die............I am looking for new adventures all the time.

I beg to differ. It depends on one's outlook and interests. I think retirement is great in that I can do what I want. Right now, I am helping out with my grandchildren and love it and love watching them develop. I am not waiting to die............I am looking for new adventures all the time.

I'm with you on that Greymo. My parent are retired and they are busy busy people. They volunteer at the hospital, at church and other projects. My Dad does taxes for members of AARP. They golf at least once per week. They've travelled all over the country and abroad.
I sit here at my desk and they are out and about doing tons of stuff I hope to do when I retire in 30 years. I can never reach them at home during the day. I hope to have a retirement like them.

Good for them. It sounds like they have a lot of interests and inquiring minds. I find that there are more retirees like them, than ones sitting around "waiting to die".

Incidentally, if one is retired, ome has a lot more time to go off on side roads and look for Roadfood instead of having to resort to chain restaurants because of time constraints, or being too tired to seek interesting regional food.

I am sorry you feel this way, Paul. I have been retired for over 7 years, and I have so much more that I want to accomplish that it will take me at least 25 more years to do it all.

I'm a PIA but I love what I do and wake every moring raring to go. One comment made brought a chuckle. I was a young green as grass engineer fresh out of the Navy and went to work for a construction company in Texas. We hot bunked in a run down single wide for about six months. We were the lucky ones...the regular workers lived in dropped container trailers w/ a/c unit plugged in the end.

I'll never retire...I'll just start another business...fresh eggs anyone?

My Gramma is 91, and still volunteers in her area and at the Jr college.

She still travels quite a bit, (leaving June 1 to go to Banff BC for a week) and just two days ago totaled her car after a tire blew out on a gravel road...she walked away un-injured and bought a new car today. Said she can't imagine being cooped up at home all day, it would drive her crazy.

And she can still beat me on a Sudoku puzzle and talks about things that happened that I didn't even remember! I still have to laugh when I think about the time we were at my Mom's, and Gramma described in detail the kitchen of a house my Mom lived in 20 years ago. My Mom argued that she did not have a flat top range ever in her life, but after more description by my Gramma it dawned on her that Gramma was absolutely correct...

I can only hope I have the love of life and the enjoyment of being involved and interested when(if) I reach that age.

If work is a pleasure, you should not retire. I always remember what happened to Bear Bryant as a cautionary tale.

Back to the original joke. Along the lines of the "Does your dog bite?" scene in "Pink Panther Strikes Again."

                                                        Clouseau: "Does your dog bite?"
                                                        Innkeeper: "No."
Clouseau: "Nice doggy" (bends down to pet a dachshund - it snarls and bites him).
Clouseau: "I thought you said your dog does not bite!"
                                                        Innkeeper: "That...is not my dog!"

I looked forward to retirement for my entire working career and I have enjoyed every minute since I retired at 47, 14 years ago. As far as I am concerned, people who can't find ways to amuse themselves other than going to work are to be pittied. For one thing, having plenty of time during the day allows me to plan, obtain or prepare and eat meals that I enjoy rather than stuffing down some food before I fell over from exhaustion at the end of a day at work. And when I was working, had to be there at 7 which meant getting up around 5, I always felt sleep-deprived. Now I can sleep as late as I like and feel good. So to the working stiffs of the world I say, "Somebody's got to do it--better you than me."

                                                            G. Bush is not a great president but he is by no means the worst...read your history. Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Harrison or Hoover are wonderful representations of the crap that can become President. Bush simply inherited his title as will his brother.
