The Magic Pan?

Does anyone remember a French restaurant called "The Magic Pan"? We used to have one in Lexington, KY, and they mainly served crepes. Are they still around anywhere?

I haven't seen one in years. We used to have one in CA, in the Woodland Hills Promenade. To me it was the perfect plaqce-----sophisticated but casual, gourmet but still something you didn't need to dress up for. I still remember their Coquilles St. Jacques crepes----yum!

Yeah, they used to be in all the malls. I remember having their hot fudge ice cream crepe at the Santa Anita Fashion Plaza in Arcadia, CA back when. Who knows; maybe there's one somewhere. I thought Orange Julius was gone until I went to Hawaii and discovered it being served as part of the Subway chain although a pale shadow of its former self; no chili dogs, no cool orange devil trademark, etc. Just the orange drink nowadays.

I used to eat at the one in Toronto; introduced me to crepes, now one of my favorite foods. I believe they're out of business.

Of course, I can't let a Magic Pan reference pass without saying, "Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum!" Seinfeld fans will understand....

The Cubans rolled the crepes too tight!

    I thought the same thing!

The Magic Pan used to be my Mom's favorite place in NY City...but I believe they are all gone now.

I went to MP once when I was a child in the Hawthorn Center mall in Vernon Hills, IL. I kept bugging "mom" to take me there again, but they closed. Good news to anyone who misses it like I do: One is opening up again in another mall close to the first I cite above, which would mean to me that we can expect others. I've seen a reference to MP that indicates it will be a food-court type of restaurant, at least that's what they have in Mall of America. I hope it's a sit-down place, but I'll take the fast-food format as well. After all, in Paris there are tons of crêpe stands all over, n'est-ce pas?

A friend of mine used to work at the Magic Pan at Northlake Mall in Atlanta in the 80s. Most of their items seemed to be good to better than average to me, especially some of the dessert crepes. We called the restaurant the "tragic pan", since there was always a soap opera or two going on among the employees.

The one in Lexington, KY, was in the Civic center shopping area. You could sit "open air" or inside. I never had a bad meal there, and it was one of my favorite places to go when I was little. I don't eat sweets anymore, but I remember the dessert crepe they had with the chocolate sauce and ice cream. It's a shame this chain appears to be utterly gone.

Nibsey, they tried to send my password but tha email in my lemmo was busted! Ever seen "trading places"?

Anyway, what I found they called the fritters. I guess a ball and a fritter are almost the same, and yep, w/ tha mustard sauce. That sauce sounds real good also.

There's a guy who finds lost recipes called pheadrus (spelling?) and he does a good job. Lots of good copycat recipes at his site, and they are good ones. He had the fritters and some more MP recipes. You can even email him if you are looking for a lost recipe. I found him a few years ago and asked if he could find Benny Binion's chili recipe. He tried but couldn't, that was a hard one. I did find it but it had to come from combined info from several sources.

    Joe.

The recipes I found are suppose to be the origionals...I will know as soon as I make it if it is....That is how much I loved the selections I am making when I was younger(my 20s vs 40s now)) ...I will try and search that man u were talking about. I love recipes in general.

I am going to have to do this quicker than I planned because I just decided that b4 I quit smoking in January I am going to attempt to and hopefully succeed at losing 30lbs...or as close to it as I can..None of the recipes I am going to make and try and condusive to that plan...Hopefully over the weekend or at least the beginning of the week. Ill let you know how they turn out..I am especially excited about the salad dressing and the cheese balls..and the cabanara...I can tweek all of these for my new lifestyle plan I think but I am going to do them as is first and see how they work out. Maybe after I try them the first time the cravings(yrs worth) will be somewhat satisfied and I can go without all together for a few months anyways...

    Take care
