The Manliest Restaurant in America?
Thu, 03/24/11 2:30 PM
( permalink)
Full and total disclosure right off the bat: I'm with Men's Health magazine. We’re on a mission to discover the manliest restaurants in America, and we’re on the hunt for nominees. What places across the country do you think deserve the title? Have you been to most legit taco truck in all of the Southwest? The most authentic newspaper tablecloth crab shack in the Mid-Atlantic? The best throwback steakhouse in Vegas? A biker bar built inside a missile silo that’s serving up an unbelievable shepherd’s pie? Okay, the last one's a little extreme, but you get the point... What would be your nominees?

Any steakhouse that lets you grill your own... I had an uncle that would pretty much never leave the grill area, there was always someone that (he thought) looked like they needed a little help cookin' their dinner.

Manly in what way? As in, no one asks about calories when they're there?

Paul Funyun, I think you may find some differences in what Men's Health Magazine considers "Manly"........ And what Roadfooders consider "Manly"....

Joe, where do you get those pics----they seem to be right at your fingertips. Someone asks a question and immediately, or within a few seconds of immediately, u present a slide show of exactly the perfect pics. All the way from Pix-ton, Pennsylvania I just love the guy in the red's outfit. Stunning. Like with a stun gun.

wanderingjew Paul Funyun The best throwback steakhouse in Vegas? What would be your nominees? It was good enough for the Rat Pack therefore it was good enough for me on my visit back in May 2006 http://www.goldensteersteakhouselv.com/vegas/index.html Love the Golden Steer. Baked Potato the size of a football!!!

That manly man is Jimmy, from Tony's Restaurant. Has a nice Hi-Tal-Yen hat for every day of the week. Never got to see his Sunday hat though, but I'm sure he has one. And that would be my submission for a "Manly" restaurant. Hmmmmm? Now where would an Old Sea Dog hang out? it would have to be a Manly place.

Joe Rogo, that is the best restaurant review I have read today, bar none. Actually --it is excellent and made me want to get on my 3 wheeler and pedal my butt up to PA. Watch out Tony's here I come, ready or not, anybody round my base is IT. Man that looks like the bos'n I sailed with--was in WW1 and called back for WW2----probably part of the crew on the Ronald Reagan.

Any Concrete block building with no windows in it and a Budweiser sign that just reads "Bar" hanging over the door, nothing but motorcycles and pickup trucks with gun racks parked in the dirt parking lot. When you open the door you're blasted by the smell of stale beer and fresh popcorn. It takes 10 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dimness and then you spot a shuffleboard and a pool table right next to the jukebox that has nothing but country music in it. The menu up on the chalkboard consists of a jar of pickled eggs and a jar of pickled pigs feet and frozen pizza. The 60 year old bra-less lady bartender wearing a tank top that says "Don't mess with Texas" and she's covered with tatoos asks ya, "Watta ya have?"---------- THEN you know you're in a Manly Man's Bar & Restaurant.

Here's my personal prejudice, if it is in any big city (except for The Burgh), it is not manly. The choice will need to be in flyover country, preferably the mountain or desert west. Someplace like this.

Love this thread! Foodbme, great description! Joe, great pics and quick wit. I've seen Richard Simmons in person and my eyes are still burning. He doesn't have an "off' switch. At first glance I thought the Old Sea Dog picture was Ernest Borgnine! As for the 60 v. 30 thing, I've seen some pretty spectacular looking 60 yr old women out there!

You guys are great! If scary counts as manly, I will nominate the Gopher bar in St. Paul. Pretty good coneys but hoooeee, they use the F word like Hawaiians use Aloha, only much louder. Wish I knew how to post pictures.

the ancient mariner Food-bee-you----how do you know about these places? I lived in the FL Panhandle for 16 years--AKA LA - Lower Alabama, the Redneck Riveria! JRPfeff, Roman's was one of the places I was thinking of when I wrote my description of a manly place!

joerogo Paul Funyun, I think you may find some differences in what Men's Health Magazine considers "Manly"........ Please use the bathroom BEFORE you watch this. I've met Richard Simmons, too. I thought he was overwhelmed at the amount of people who came to see him, which I didn't understand because HELLO! You are Richard Simmons!!! He squeezed my hand as he was walking up to the stage. This link has 0 to do with manly restaurants, so if it gets pulled, google "richard simmons whose line is it anyway youtube" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG9HNWBU9ms As for manly restaurants, I'd have to say Jake's on 17th & North in Milwaukee. No bs, just great food. And Kopp's for serious burgers & custard, they will even sell you a side of bacon & look the other way while you decorate your custard with it--I have a pic if you're interested, will have to figure out how to get it from Facebook to here.

Mens Health magazine is a contradiction in terms like army intelligence.(sp) the majority of men in this country want to eat what we want to eat DO I HEAR AN AMEN!!! health be dammed!!! REAL MEN EAT WHAT THEY WANT, WHEN THEY WANT. calories be dammed. DO I HEAR AN AMEN??? the manliest restaurant in America is in our own backyard on OUR grills at 1000 degrees cooking a ribeye or strip steak or porterhouse steak to a nice rare or medium rare with the juics running on the plate. thats the MANLIEST RESTAURANT IN AMERICA, Mr. Funyan.
