Five miles east of 95 (exit 21) in Rdigeland SC, on Rte 336 at the intersection of 462, is one of the best kept secrets on the road. The "Old House Smokehouse" is not a BBQ place, it is a great "Steak and Seafood" restaurant. We were not expecting this at all and were very surprised that a rambling old wood building with a couple of chickens outside, turned out to be a quaint, gourmet venue with fine dining. As for the name, the building was constructed partially from the wood of an old smokehouse from the Walterboro area. The door to the kitchen is the original smokehouse door. The decorations vary from antiques to modern art. The owner/chef (Frank) was in the process of redecorating the bar ceiling to "road stripe" yellow (he actually matched the paint to the road out side) to compliment a newly acquired painting. You need to see this for yourself.
As for the food, it was excellent. I had the 8 ounce Beef Tenderloin which I had blackened. It was the most tender and delicious piece of fillet I've had in years. Cooked perfectly, it was accompanied with roasted Herbed Potatoes and a vegetable medley of Yellow Squash and Carrots. The meal also included a house salad with the option of a Ceasar for $2 more. My spouse had the Grilled Salmon with the same sides. He was very pleased with the preparation as it was not dry. Following dinner and an enjoyable, entertaining conversation with the chef, we managed to make room for dessert (I had to try it). I had a very moist, flavorful piece of homemade German Chocolate Cake. My husband chose the Creme Brulee, which was a nice sized portion and very good.
The fillet was $23 and the salmon was $18
We plan to return and bring friends!
The location is also a historical area and near the site of the tomb of Thomas Heyward, for those who interested in American history.
