The Rose Bowl...on ESPN??? Sun, 12/19/10 10:18 AM (permalink)
Apparently this year the Rose Bowl game will be televised by ESPN and not broadcast over the air as in years past.  I'm disappointed that an American tradition like "the grandaddy of 'em all" will be available only to those who're willing to pay and not to everyone who has a TV, as this is a game that reaches out to more people than just the college football fans.  And especially this year, where the 2 teams involved are from states with many rural, non-cable regions where satellite is the only option other than OTA signals...hopefully at least in those areas the local ABC stations can work out some sort of deal in order to be able to carry the game.  But it still sucks, and I wonder how much backlash ABC and ESPN are getting from this.

I  agree Brad. But apparently loyalty and tradition are not involved in the marketing of the Bowls. We have a crowded holiday broadcast schedule .

NBC will be packed with 'Ice-Skating' Specials...

CBS and ABC will do the Best of 2010 News and Sports stories..over and over, combined with  Donnie and Marie Hosting the Hip-Hop Music Awards from Disney World on NYE,
Then they will replay that and the Rose Parade Highlights all N.Y. Day!...

Followed by such hi-priority Bowl games as Panhandle A & M vs Pepperdine in the Grapes of Wrath Bowl in Bakersfield, CA.  No Room for the Patriarch of the Bowl Games in this day and age  ...Although about 45 seconds of Highlites will be leaked out to the Fox Sports for discussion on the 'NFL-Today' talk show!!!

Well...that tells me I'll be hoping to find an open bar somewhere, then.  Just like when Monday Night Football moved.  Apparently, we're all supposed to pay ridiculous amounts of money to watch TV now, whether we like it or not.

I think when I was reading the entire bowl lineup Fox and CBS had one game each and ESPN had all the rest.

              Michael,
I guess I missed the note about changing the selectee's for the Rose Bowl Game. It was always the PAC-10 champ vs the Big-10 champ.  How didTCU get in there. I thought they just jumped to the BIG-East (at least in BBall!). I was hoping for another animal Bowl...Badgers-Ducks or maybe Bears or something mean.. Pitting the Christians against Badgers just doesn't sound right to me !!!  (BTW I have no clue as to the nick-name for TCU)

A bit of god advise from an ancient mariner----find the Sun Bowl on your screen.  Sit back with a batch of good eatin' stuff and some libation to wash it all down with and watch the marvelous lads from Notre Dame kick the daylights out of the guys from Miami.

Ah, t'wil be a glorious event-----the likes of which has never been seen before.  The Irish triumph will go down in the history books, Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame---Go Iriish !!!!

Al, Oregon won the Pac 10, but they're going to the BCS championship game. The Rose is a BCS bowl, and TCU is a BCS team. That's why the Horned Frogs are going to play the Badgers, who tied  for the Big Ten title with Ohio State and Michigan State.

ABC sports ceased to exist several years ago.  Even when sports are on ABC it is really an ESPN production.  So once they wrestled the BCS games away from Fox they took the opportunity to move almost all the games to the cable channel.  As stated above 33 of 35 bowl games on ESPN (though one of those is broadcast on ABC).  It's only a matter of time before the Superbowl ends up on ESPN.

Well, there's nothing lost with Fox not having games -- college football games, I mean. They do a terrible job with the college game.

I do believe Hatteras04 has it correct. You will be able to see the game on your ABC Affiliate station since many games this year were listed as ESPN games but were broadcast on ABC. The only thing sadly missing is Keith Jackson broadcasting the game.

I don't think so.  They did do several "mirror games" throughout the regualr season where they would show one part of the country a game on ABC and the other the same game on ESPN but I think the BCS games (and all but 3 bowl games) are strictly on ESPN.

According to its online listings my local ABC station will have the Outback Bowl starting at 1pm CST on New Year's Day but no other games, and I suspect it'll be that way for the entire country since this isn't the regular season where multiple regional broadcasts occupy the same time slot.

Did Keith Jackson announce last year's game?  I know he partially retired a number of years back but it seems like he was still calling the Rose Bowl.

The days of starting with the Cotton Bowl at 11am, surfing between 2 and 3 games throughout the afternoon, and finishing with the Orange and Sugar Bowls into the night are over for the over-the-air viewer.  Maybe I'll throw the missus into the car and go hunting for some roadfood instead!
