A simple rule is to never take anything you read in an e-mail or message board as anything worth serious thought - dismiss it all as harmless fun and respond in kind.

What a great website! Had a lot of fun scrolling through it.

I think flame wars go on because people don't wait until they're calm and have their thoughts collected and can articulate properly.

I once wrote a long rant to the San Francisco Giants Fan Forum after falling into their fire pit (losing is not good) and sat back waiting everyone to respond demanding I be hired as General Manager.
