"The Secret" Sun, 07/1/07 11:00 PM (permalink)
I just saw the movie (or part of it) of "The Secret" based on the wildly popular book of the same name - an Oprah vetted work.

I thought it was the most inane movie I've see - I couldn't sit thru more that 1/2 hr.

The "message" of "The Secret" is that our thoughts create our reality. Oh, that's fine. But the movie is ridiculous - it has talking heads of all sorts of experts I've never heard of - credentials like "MBA", "author", "writer" all spouting the "secret" - It claims ALL the things that happen to you are because you attract it - like an example of a guy who's bike was stolen because he had the negative thought that it would be stolen. I'm sure they blame poverty, war, illness etc on the victims because they "attract" it.

The audience was lapping it up. They were so uncritical. (Of course, it implies that being critical is a negative thought anyway, so it probable "attracts" a bad reaction to the movie). As I left another woman also left - I turned to her and said: "That was inane" and she replied: "What do you mean "inane?"

Anyway, has anyone else seen it - or read the book?? Maybe you can help me adjust my attitude????

Your attitude is fine. Just another shill on an old idea. My graduation speaker 39 years ago was Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. He wrote The Power of Positive Thinking. What comes round, comes round or just another package to sell books and make a buck. Heck there is even a religious movement called Science of Mind that has been around. BTW, most religions call it prayer.

Or Self Fullfilling Prophecy. Like if you think you will be fired you'll be so paranoid you'll do something dumb and get yourself fired.

If Oprah said we should read cereal box labels some people would swear it was the greatest thing since War and Peace.

Joe, I heard her say that she liked BBQ on one of her programs. Of all the wise-words I have ever heard on TV those were the most significant I have ever heard. I have taken them into my heart and soul and have tried as best I can to make them a part of my daily life! It appears that repetition works, as the more I think of BBQ being good, The more I want. The more I want, the more I enjoy....and ...and !

I thought she didn't eat beef. Didn't she start a rucuss with the beef industry a few years back. It's a good thing you missed that show.

Al, the reason Texans like beef BBQ better than pork is that it's too hard to steal a pig and ride a horse at the same time.

Al, I have a long memory, I'm going to remind you you said that next time we are in Lockhart. Besides, we know what real BBQ is, we invented it.

I think, Therefore I am. Not a bad way to present oneself, I guess!
