The Smell of Coffee- HMMM or UGGGH

Hello All,
This is silly, but the smell of
my wife's coffee when she brews it
varies and offends my sense of smell.
When I was young, my parent's coffee,
(Maxwell) just smelt like coffee.
But my wife's coffee often smells like
skunk or dog food, and I don't understand why.
She uses Cafe Bustelo currently.
Folks, am I alone? Anyone else have a stinky
coffee smell?
Or...how does your coffee smell?
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

I would be checking that cafe Bustello real close and be more than willing let the wife drink the first cup. Though modern coffee are different and now there are numerous flavors skunk and dog food are not among them. Hubert

The smell, love it. The taste? I cannot put it in my mouth. Tea brewing, on the other hand, the smell makes me feel ill. And I'd rather drink coffee.

I have never experienced bad coffee smells either.. I would thoroughly clean out the coffeemaker and switch coffee brands.

I bet your parents' Maxwell House was percolated and not drip. Percolated coffee has a better burping musical beat sound than the groaning agony of drip coffee makers. That alone might account for a better smell. Also, brewing coffee smell and taste don't necessarily go hand in hand.

I'm not familiar with the Cafe Bustelo brand. I hope it is not the expensive coffee from beans that first go through the digestive system of an Indonesian palm civit.

Cafe Bustelo is dark, Cuban style coffee. You can get it at the supermarket.

I love the smell of a good, fresh, dark roast, rich coffee. And yes, I agree, the smell sometimes is not the same as the taste. Sometimes the smell is so much better than the taste. I think that's because of the oils and the roast- and cleaning your coffee maker- no matter what kind it is- that's very important.
When we were first married I had a strange looking percolator type- and it made the best coffee. It was shaped like an urn, sat on a single round foot on the gas burner of our 2-burner stove and was truly unique. Have never seen another one like it. Sadly it was broken when it got slammed to the counter. I have tried several different kinds of brewers- drips (like my parents used), percolators ( my favorite- but hard to find these days), French Roast makers, and the electric coffee makers. The last are the easiest to use, but they really do not enhance the flavor of the beans,IMHO.

One of the best smells ever is when my husband makes Community Coffee w/Chicory 1st thing in the morning. Good coffee has such a great, rich smell, although some of the darker roasts can smell a bit acrid. I left a bag of coffee beans in my truck overnight, and the smell the next morning was almost as good as a fresh cup.
You want stinky coffee, though--try leaving generic coffee on an office burner too long. That first whiff of burning coffee, and everyone is sprinting towards the coffee maker to shut it off and rinse out the pot. Blarhgh.

I am not a coffee drinker. If I do consume some it is normally half-cream and heavy with sugar. However, I do like the aroma of coffee brewing. Go Figure! With the advent of the flavored coffees and Cappachino in the Convenience stores, I will sometimes get one of them rather than my usual Pepsi or Coke. I do love Coffee and, even better, Mocha ice Cream. Graters, the Cincinnati ice Cream maker does a wonderful job with their MOCHA CHIP Ice Cream. It could make a real coffee addict out of me if I let it.

Although I brew freshly ground Community Coffee every morning ( my husband is a tremendous coffee drinker ) I actually prefer hot teas in the A.M. .......But,I love the smell of brewing coffee...One of the pleasures of life !

I can't stand coffee unless it is adulterated with lots of cream. But, I am in heaven whenever I am at the grocery store and go down the coffee aisle. The aroma is so fantastic!

I think of those commercials where the person wakes up to the aroma of coffee. In real life, if I woke to the wonderful aroma of coffee, wafting through my bedroom door from one flight below me, I'd be hugely disappointed that I got out of bed, followed the smell to the kitchen, only to see a can of Folger's sitting on the counter.

I'm not sure I'd call *$ "strong" coffee so much as over roasted. The varietals used become less important and many folks have become accustomed to coffee in this style. Nuances and flavor notes from the world's many different beans, many grown under unique conditions and different altitudes, diminish the longer you roast a good bean.

My wife will generally get out of bed before I do. She tries to hold off but eventually the burr grinder will be my alarm clock that tells me to get up and walk 300 feet up to the road and get the newspaper. As soon as I get back in the door I can smell the coffee brewing. That's my routine. I love a good cup of coffee. I can distinctly remember my first cup ever.

Fieldthistle ~ In the news today is "cat dung coffee"; perhaps your wife is indulging in this?
A Google search of "cat dung coffee" brings further results.

    Hello All,
jimsock9, haha, you don't know my wife.
I read your cat dung article, but she is
prim, proper, and wouldn't touch such a
    product.
I do not drink coffee at all, and am ignorant.
My wife is a lover of it. She has a silver metal
thing which has 2 sections. The top
part she puts in her coffee and the bottom she
puts in water. She also creates a creamy, milky
mixture in her coffee cup first, then pours her
    coffee into it.
Wherever my wife does, isn't the coffee I recall
smelling from my parent's perk coffee making.
Regardless, I love my wife and hope to never miss
the god-awful smell of her morning coffee.
    Take Care,
    Fieldthistle

I'm like Al; I love the smell of coffee but do not drink it except occaisionally, heavily doctored with cream and sugar.

During my three pregnancies, though, I could not stomach the smell. My co-workers had to relocate our office pot into a different room because I had such a strong reaction to it (i.e. brinking on throw up!)

I only really wake up when I can smell my coffee brewing in the morning. I only drink two cups a day but they are very good! I usually add a few shakes of sea salt to my coffee grounds in the filter to help round out the flavor. I can not stand the burned aroma and flavor of Starbuck's "coffee." That stuff is roasted way too long for my taste. You can't really taste the coffee, only the roast. Are they really using quality beans or just over roasting a bad product to hide the fact???

To me, the most wonderful aroma in the world is perking coffee, wood smoke and bacon frying while I am camping.

If they could bottle that aroma I would wear it. LOL
