The Strangest Southern BBQ "Joint" I Have Seen!

'Cause it's no "joint" at all! It's very upscale, with trendy appointments, and a not so average BBQ menu. After the initial shock, of no dilapidated building with some sort of garish pig out front, I settled in to some really good BBQ! It's called "Bennett's Bad To The Bone" http://www.bennettsbadbbq.com/menu.html I plan a review on the "Georgia" forum. Ever seen a BBQ joint... I mean restaurant...that DID NOT offer some type of a sliced/chopped BBQ PLATE??? At least down south, you usually have ribs, sandwiches, and PLATES. Comments Welcomed, on upscale BBQ~~~!

When did "tri tip" become a Texas thing? I thought that was more regional a little further out west. But, it doesn't seem THAT upscale. Mac and cheese for $2? For that matter, anything on the menu for $2 (except the after dinner mint) usually doesn't strike me as particularly upscale. This place seems kind of affordable. Does it seem "kitschy?" Yeah. Does it seem like the marketing brainchild of someone who is not planning just one location? Yeah. But, the prices seem reasonable, which is not something I usually equate with "upscale."

Trust me... For Georgia this is upscale BBQ. The bathrooms were indoors. I never said the place was costly... Actually, their QT. of Brunswick for $3.95 (and it is SUPERB!) is about the best bang for the buck, I have tasted in a whole lot of blue moons.

Strangest Southern Q place for me was in Barnwell SC. I was working there for two weeks and of course asked the folks where I was working, "What makes the food from your area different from other areas or What kind of food are you folks known for around here?" which helps me bypass the Applebee's and Arby's answers. I mentioned BBQ amongst others. Well they gave me a lead on a guy who starts smoking his pigs on Mondays and smokes em all week long. Now they told me he was only open fridays from about 11 until the 'que ran out, I asked when was he usually out and they said it was usally all gone by 1PM. Well I drove up to this pole barn where this guy ran a Welding business and there was this line that had to be 100+ strong, all waiting for this guy's 'que. No signs for the BBQ, just the welding shop, and a couple of picninc tables on the side of the building. Man was it ever good, it was definately worth the wait in line. The folks in line were friendly, talkative and chatted a Yankee from Maryland. I can't remember the name of it now, it's been about 5-6 years ago.
