Supper Smokers BBQ out of Eureka Mo. We had one in Ofallon, Illinois. Guess what. They are out of biz. Good thing. They were a waste of good meat.

I've been to Famous Dave's on perhaps six occasions and have never had a good meal. In that many trips, one would think I could get a hit. I can't imagine how they stay in business.

However, the absolute worst barbecue (worst restaurant food to boot) I've ever had was Buck's Barbecue in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, just outside Chattanooga. Everything from the entree to the sides to the beverage was rock bottom pitiful. And I'm being generous, too!

Ridgewood off the Elizabethton Hwy., in East TN. It's a great ham sandwich (would be better on a dark bread with mustard, lettuce, pickles, and onions) but it's not BBQ.

The Famous Daves here in Woodbridge, VA is pretty good. There is only one other bbq restaurant everyone raves about Dixie Bones, and while the que is as good, their 'homemade' rolls are always dry, they have less choices of sides, and they are more expensive. I have been to other Famous Daves and agree, not the best choice for que....but the one here is always pretty darn good, with great service.

I am not a huge que fan beyond what I make myself, so I cannot say I have had horrible que other than what my ex husband made on an rv weekend out of brisket while I and his bros wife were busy drinking tequila and could not therefore cook, lol.

Latham's Meat Co in Jackson, TN. Whenever I go back to Jackson from Atlanta I have to get some West TN BBQ. I usually go to the same places (Brooksie's, Pig House), but on my last trip I decided to try Latham's. I noticed it's always crowded and there's always wood burning out back, so it must be good! Very disappointed to say the least. The meat was tender, but it had absolutely zero flavor (I prefer little or no sauce). The slaw looked to be from a food service and the baked beans were dumped straight from a can. Never again!

BTW, out of all of the West TN BBQ joints outside of Memphis, Bozo's gets my vote as the best!

Not me! Just don't slather it on after the meats been cooked or what's the point? I love it when my ribs and chicken's been marinating a spell (overnight is okay, but longer is mostly better). St. Louis Style (I believe that means lay on the sauce, then rub on the rub after it's marinated half an hour or so) is so good even I can't make a bad batch.

The worst I ever had, alas, is a batch I made. Enough about that from me. Restaurants get the sniff test first, so I avoid bad food for the most part.

Man that's blasphemy around these parts! But truthfully I've been there several times and to me it's not all that. It's certainly not the worse BBQ I've had though.

ces1948,

It's not BBQ. It's smoked ham. Good smoked ham but not BBQ.

The slaw's special ingredients are bread and butter pickles and Kraft's slaw dressing.

Once again if you can't enter it into Memphis in May it's not Q.

It is good ham though.

I don't know what you can enter in Memphis but you can BBQ whatever you like. I wouldn't order it but they BBQ mutton up in Kentucky. They also BBQ beef in Texas which I would order.

ces1948,

TN Q should only come from the kosher end of the hog

Seriously, you can smoke anything but that doesn't make it BBQ (sorry Texas).

And I'm not knocking on you or anyone's opinion, I'm just an old Memphis boy that like's his Q a certain way. Evidently there is a new state called Kansas that claim's to BBQ but I have only known that area for steaks. Go figure.

It is if they shove the apple in the pig's mouth and put the whole sucker on a rotisserie. Technically, at least according to Messrs. Merriam and Webster, grilled food isn't barbecued, but that's a technicality.

I could be wrong but this next is a broad generalization about chains like Sonny's Famouse Daves Rudys and another hopeless chain here in Austin, Smoky Mo's. Chains tend to be bad, no standarization and not a lot of pride in the product. But I could be wrong.

This was posted byBBQJimBob a while back and I thought it was a great example of what can happen if you wander into a "BBQ restaurant" outside of "BBQ country":

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The wife and I went to local, so-called "BBQ" restaurant tonight in
Canton, Ohio, called Hog Heaven. Their "claim to fame" is, as they put
it, "authentic BBQ". The wife, who is as pretty as she is sweet
(Sweeter than the crap they tried to pass off as BBQ sauce!), had
gotten me a gift certificate for Christmas to the joint, knowing how
much I'd enjoy real BBQ. OK- enough chit-chat- They had several
specials tonight- 2 of which were a full rack of ribs (12 bones) w/ no
sides for $10, and a skewer of 5 shrimp for $1.50. I ordered the full
rack dry, w/ sauce on the side- I asked for the least sweet sauce they
had, and a skewer of shrimp. My wife got the ribs (6 bones) and
brisket combo.

Geez- where do I start?! My ribs were about as bland as "par-boiled"
mush w/ no butter or syrup- I'm pretty sure their journey to the table
began in boiling water, and then on to an oven, until they were
"falling off the bone" tender, at which point they normally would have
been slathered with sickeningly sweet sauce, and grilled for a few
minutes. I think they would have actually been better with the sweet
sauce- the bones probably had more, and better flavor! On to the
wife's brisket- it was very odd looking, and tasted like "medicine"-
which I contribute to the probable use of liquid smoke. My wife
couldn't stand it, and after tasting it, I couldn't blame her. We said
something to our server, and she replaced the brisket with what they
called "pulled pork". Geez- it just doesn't get any better. While the
pulled pork didn't have a bad taste, it lacked any bold and smoke
flavor whatsoever! It tasted like it had been cooked in an oven
instead of a pit. It reminded me of mom's Sunday dinners years ago,
when she'd make roast pork- except her dinners were much better. Next-
the skewer of shrimp. I chose the spicy garlic sauce, which was
actually not bad. However, the shrimp were grilled for way too long.
They were chewy and rubbery! Damn- can this place get anything right?!
The appetizer we ordered was their nachos w/ roast pork- uh, I mean
pulled pork (Yea- right). The "cheese" on it was of the "processed"
variety, similar to the taste of a rough night of partying coming back
up- not that I'd know anything about that, of course!

When I said something to our server about the food tasting nothing
like real BBQ, she admitted that they DID NOT EVEN HAVE A PIT, and
that everything was "cooked" in the oven, and then grilled for the
last few minutes, with the exception of their brisket, which never
even made it to the grill! Our server said something to the manager,
who took a whopping $3.47 off of our $50.00 bill, due to our
"dissatisfaction"! Gee, thanks!

Fat Matt's Rib Shack in Atlanta. The rib platter was a disconnected mass of fat, cartilage and a few shards of meat. All but inedible.
