The Yellow Pages ???

The Yellow Pages were delivered to our building the other day and I'd guess 99% went directly into the recycling bin. What with the Internet being what it is these days, I'm wondering if anyone still let's their fingers do the walking.

I think it depends on the area you live in and your age. Many studies have shown that people in the 50+ age bracket by and large do not use the internet for anything. There are also plenty of areas in the country where the only internet capability is via dial-up phone lines, and people in those limited service areas don't use the internet as much because of that. But the younger the demo, the higher the internet use. One recent study showed that many people between 20-30 no longer even have "land lines" in their homes. They use their cell for all phone calls, and an internet provider like RoadRunner for everything else.

I don't know the 'stat's', but I agree in concept with Mack. I use the yellow pages for local stuff. We recently needed a furnace repair man...I used the yellow pages to locate a few in our local (rural) service area and started calling. For long distance, I use the on-line yellow pages most of the time...and the White Pages almost all the time. I haven't called 411 for a paid-service call-lookup...ever. Within our family--a total of 11 family units-- that's 10 adult children with their own sub-families, and my home... 6 have landline phones, in addition to individual cell-phones to some of the sub-family members, 5 have no landline phones at all, using only cell-phones for their communication. Since I am in the "6" group, we would have to say that 50 percent of my family falls into each catagory. I have two landline phone lines. One for my dial-up connection, and one for regular phone service. I know that this is an out-dated technology, but we have no access to either DSL or other Hi-Speed Internet. The Sat. Internet is not a satisfactory alternative to us (yet).

Many people don't use the internet, both personal and business. Many business won't advertise on the internet for the simple fact they don't have time to run down web searches, or pay someone to do a web page or learn html themselves. They don't like hunting down reputable sites to place an ad, nor do they want to pay top dollar for web space with no promise it will be there next week. Just because you are business savvy doesn't make one web savvy. With the phone book you know right where to find them. And unless the consumer tosses it, it's always there. And I'm not saying all that because my mother worked for L.M Berry Bellsouth for 24 years rofl.

I find the Yellow Pages to be an essential part of finding where to eat. I will always look at the local phone book as they have a restaurant section that will have menus listed inside. I also like the weekly papers, as they will have a good listing of places to go. mark

Definitely agree with the part about the restaurant menus! Even though I live in a small community (population 3,500-4,000), we get 3-4 phone books a year: the "official" Bell South Yellow Pages, two books for Dothan, AL, 35 miles up the road & the book for the two surrounding counties, although the white pages sections for all of them are nearly alike. Still have a book from 1971-72...a trip to see how many of the businesses back then have disappeared or are still around now?

Doggy Dad I agree the Yellow Pages are a necessity in the Motel Room each evening ! We may use roadfood and travel notes, but often (depending on where we are) the Yellow pages give us a heading for a part of town we weren't aware of when we checked in. We find them a valuable resource for meal selection .

The guy I used to date carried yellow pages in his car and it was invaluable when looking for restaurants and checking movie times on the go.

I keep mine in the car as well...I'd much rather look something up than pay $2.99 to call information on my cell phone (or whatever ridiculous amount of money they charge). I usually manage to "borrow" a copy from the cities I frequent most for work as well...saves a lot of hassle and headache.

I have Sprint mobile sevice and they do not charge me for information and they automatically ring it for you. I use the yellow pages quite frequently at my residence. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I've had internet since 95, broadband since 98, and I feel naked without the local yellow pages. I always get at least 3 bids for repair work around here and find using the YP the best tool for accomplishing that goal.

The last time I was in London, I used the yellow pages to find several food places. I will agree with Al - On the road traveling I check out the yellow pages, if I don't have a RF place handy. Sometimes I find a diamond, sometimes not even a lump of coal.

Sometimes I use the Internet and sometimes I use the Yellow pages, it depends on what I want. If I already know about a place I might use the internet but when I want general info (ie- where can I find, lets say, a place that repairs watches in a certain location - something I did recently) - I use the yellow pages. I still think the internet only lists websites or places that pay to be on a search, but sometimes what I need may not its own website or be on a search engine list.
