The beginning of the end in Boston...

I was on my way to Fenway Park a few days ago to watch the Sox beat the Indians and saw this horrible sight on the way there: There are many beautiful buildings in Boston and I lived in one that was almost exactly like this one. I'm not totally against chains, but to see one go in a building like that and partially rob it of its character was just brutal to look at. I think I wouldn't have been so offended if they hadn't slapped on all of that yellow paint over the brick.

I'm sure the upstairs neighbors are thrilled. I hope the neighborhood expresses it's dissatisfaction by eating elsewhere.

Well, they likely have the very best red beans and rice in Boston.

That is a pretty disgusting site...... Just like it looks ridiculous to me to see a Maggiones Little Italy restaurant right in the middle of center city Philly...........when there are tons of authentic Italian restaurants right nearby. (and it's only a mile or so from the Italian Market section of philly) But I guess they go for the convention crowd, as it is right across from convention center.

That's better than bulldozing the building and building another crackerbox FF Stand with parking for 50 cars, and a drive-thru. BTW Popeyes is one of the better chicken stands.

Sadly, between the B.U. students and the ball fans Popeye's will probably do well in Kenmore Square, if they can afford to feed the rats. Traditionally, nothing that's actually good survives in that neighborhood. They either succeed and move out or can't survive the summer slowdown. Maybe that's changing with the new hotel: now you have a choice between classic French at Petit Maison Robert or Popeye's.

The reactions to this Popeye's store in Boston are very amusing. I always knew that Bostonians could be rather stuffy. Have any of you ever been to a Popeye's and ordered the spicy chicken? It is quite good and I love it. In fact where is this store located? We go up there every other year to visit family and would like to get a whole bunch for a weekend dinner. Sorry, Not this year. Looking at the photo and seeing the fellow sitting on the stoop eating his chicken tells me that Popeye's has not located their new store in Back Bay or any other high dollar district. I have driven around Boston enough over the years to see the housing blight. Sure, there are all these beautiful old Brownstones, but no one wants to come in and renovate because the neighborhoods suck. Given the extortionate property values in Boston, Popeye's has taken a big chance and expended a lot of capital fixing the place up. Would you rather see a pawn shop or a Mom and Pop's place that may last a month? Then it's empty. Popeye's has deep pockets. They don't open stores where they are sure to fail. The building owner must be ecstatic. I know that this Popeye's offends the delicate sensibilities some of you, but, think of it this way, maybe this store is the beginning of this neighborhood's revitalization and if it catches hold, then all you stuffy people can move back into the old Brownstones you have known and loved. AND you have great spicy chicken right around the corner. <G> Just kidding. Sort of.

are you saying the brick was originally grey? I'd love a Popeyes that close. Right now I can drive to Vallejo, Ca or Brooks, Oregon To get my fix. Having it in my downstairs would be better.

Having it downstairs would probably be life threatening to me in the long run, but can you feel the love for the Popeye's lovers? Let Boston experience Popeye's.

The dade is for Dade City, FL. The rest is just letters. Are the Boston Brahman's putting a hit out on me for my Popeye's rebuttal? Grew up in Cincinnati, spent 12 yrs. in New Orleans and now live as hurricane bait in Dade City, FL. dadetigl

I've had Popeye's a few times and found it to be extremely salty. That being said, I don't really object to the TYPE of place being there, but the tacky gaudiness with with they painted the building. When I lived in Boston, I loved going to Beacon Hill to look at the buildings and they wway they blended modern commercial businesses into the neighborhood without robbing it of its charm (no neon signs, having facades of businesses blend in with the buildings, etc...). I lived in an apartment in Brookline for about 3 years and the places had marble stairs and dark beaded wood (cherry perhaps?) in the hallways and my apartment. The previous tenants however had whitewashed all of the wood in the apartment. When I saw it for the first time, I just about fainted.
