Ok.

I know they aren't pat of the standard package, per se, I have always though of them as an available OPTION, like lettuce& tomato (cheese steak hoagie), pizza sauce, mushrooms - stuff like that

I was worried that you meant they were not even a valid OPTION

You'll rarely find them listed on menus as "additional items" under steak sandwiches.

No green peps? Gee, they really don't know anything about cheesesteak in Philly, do they?

I've never had a Philadelphia cheesesteak, and I'm sure I'd like it, but I honestly think those made in the Boston area are great. I don't approve of calling them "Philly" because they are different. First off, you'd never have anything called "Cheez" or "Wiz" on the premises except as a practical joke. Should be shaved steak with sliced american, provolone or cheddar melted over the meat at the last turn on the grill. Grilled additions include onions, pepper, mushrooms, and for a steak bomb all of the above along with a couple slices of cappicola, salami or pepperoni (every place has their own bomb, but my favorite is cappi). After that you could add anything in the house, but I'll take just a touch of hot peppers.

It's not Philly, but that's the best cheesesteak to me.

Ok, touche TJ. I will say this: if one wants them, they can be added. Many of the shops also make pizza and any of the toppings available for pizza can be added. In Chubby's case, they offer sausage, pepper, and onion sandwiches so they have the green peppers on hand for that.

A couple of interesting add-ons on Chubby's menu are honey mustard and caesar salad dressing. I know a few people who like mustard on their cheesesteaks, but I haven't seen anyone add caesar dressing.

FWIW -

I have eaten at about 8 of the famous Philly cheesesteak places in the last few months. (Pat's, Jim's, Delassandro's, George's, and a few more) My two favorite's were White House Sub's in Atlantic City and Tony Luke's.

I found White House to be the perfect balance between the bread, meat, cheese, and onions. The fresh bread was wonderful and they put just the right amount of filling in the sandwich that keeps it from becoming a mess to eat.

What I liked about Tony Luke's was the very sharp Provolone cheese. The meat is done very nicely, but the tangy cheese just cuts through everything. It almost acts as a pallette cleanser. Their roast pork sandwich is great when you want to try something a little different. If you are going to the Ikea in south Philly, this place is right around the corner and down about a half mile.

I am no expert - just wanted to contribute my opinions.

Been there done that. Do you really want to know what it is? The answer...by far.......is Tony Lukes. Tony Lukes prov is very sharp the steak is well done and the rolls are great. Its the closest cheesesteak you will ever get to perfect.

Who said Green Peppers?? Dont come to Philly with that junk! Philly is known for there cheesesteaks and none of them do green peppers. Im not saying it couldnt be good with green peppers, but it cant be the best. Philly is the best. Tony Lukes, is the best.

Mario's has been around for over 50 years. Open late, the steak is ribeye, sliced thin and grilled when ordered. My favorite is the Ham, Steak and Cheese. Not your traditional cheesesteak, but excellent none the less. What ever sandwich you order, get it with everything. (mustard, mayo and slaw) I know, I know...just try it! Tell Lefty I sent you. If Joe is manning the pizza oven I'd advise you to get a small sandwich and a slice of pepperoni.

I've been to several places in Philly that were really good....but I've never had one better than a small dive in Tulsa, OK called Steak Stuffers. I love it with green peppers & onions....the wife prefers mushrooms instead of peppers.

shes right in south jersey we say jerzee joysy i think is a new york thing or something but i live right next to cherry hill so im in walking distance and im always at gaetanos and IMO gaetanos isnt even cloooose to Tony Lukes south philly. i been a lot of places on the east coast and if in the area i really hope u guys check it out its THE cheesesteak im tellin ya its perfection!

p.s theres a Tony Lukes bar that u can sit in and eat and theres a Tony Lukes across the street that u stand in line to get on the go (theres some benches in there if u wana sit tho) *Dont go to that one go to the bar and sit down the food is a little more well done and prepared. Either way Tony Lukes wins me over!

Meat and cheese..(standard)

onions
mushrooms..

We serve ours with P/O...
Dont offer shrooms......
It is about 50/50 ordering with just meat and cheese only.
Very few ask for mushrooms....
Me.
Personally, I like onions, cheese and shrooms.
I love peppers, but for some reason, never order them on the Cheesesteak......

I was born in TomsRiver, lived on the "island" (ortley beach, The Seasides) HighSchool in Moorestown. A couple years with Uncle Sam then lived in various places around S.Jerzee, pennsauken, woodbury, pennsgrove, maple shade, palmyra, collongswood etc etc before moving to J'ville Fl 18 yrs ago.

The only time Ive had green peppers on a cheese steak was that atrocity from arbys, my usual mantra was cheezesteak, fried onionsNhot peppers

was it Chick's Deli or Big John's ?!? They are both off of rt. 70, not too far from rt. 73.

Here's a post I just made to another thread, but I'm reposting it here because after a little digging, this was the thread that tempted me to visit the Real Thing.

Roadrash, you must have posted about liking the Real Thing a while back too, because it was in my memory and I know for much longer than just a week.

So today I had a cheesesteak sub from The Real Thing on York Road in Towson. It sucked, just like 99% of the other cheesesteak subs served in Baltimore. The cost for a 6" sub is $6 and for a 9" only $7. So value wise getting the 9", which I did, is a good buy. That's the last good thing I can say, except that the roll didn't have the usual foul taste of an H&S roll. It still ended up with the texture of wet cardboard and practically disinegrated from the grease, but it could have been an Ottenbergs, instead of an H&S. Usually I will ask the source of the rolls used, but because a Roadfooder had spoken highly of this place, I just ordered, and was dismayed at the end when I saw the type roll used.

Like every other place in Baltimore, the Real Thing chops the steak into oblivion, so that when you pick the thing up, hard to do since the roll is a wet mess, the little pellets of steak and onion fall out all over the place, not to mention that they get colder faster too.

So I'll reiterate for anyone interested. The only place in the Baltimore area whose subs are worthwhile is Pizza Johns on Back River Neck Road in Essex. Other than that, you have to drive to Philly or Atlantic City.

I've tried most of the cheesesteak places in NYC. Here's my list so far:

1.Carl's Steaks
2.99 Miles to Philly
3.Wogies
4.Philly Slim's
5.Tony Luke's
6.BB's Sandwich Bar

I haven't been to Philly Slim's yet, I thought Wogie's was ok. I had it once and don't remember it all that well. BB's is a out of left field riff on the cheesesteak. Thats all they serve there is the one sandwich. Its on a round deli/sandwich roll, chopped beef (I think chopped, not sure), american cheese, caramelized onions, and hot chili sauce (like sambal). I found it to be very salty and that one flavor overpowered the whole sandwich. Not very impressed. Carls Steaks is alright. I've been there a few times and I've found the sandwiches to be too greasy. Now I like my grease in a cheesesteak, who doesn't? But, the whole sandwich inside and out was covered in grease the last two times I was there. It was like a French Dip, but instead of dipped in beef juices, just in straight grease. 99 Miles to Philly is one of my faves, Finely hacked steak, grilled onions, whiz or provie (depending on my mood) with a good amount of grease soaking the INSIDE of the sturdy roll. Alwats had a good one there. They just opened a branch by my work and they give 15% off to local workers and they serve Gus' Pickles too. A local speacialty. My all time favorite though is the roast pro sandwich at Tony Luke's. I used to go there all the time when they first opened. Big, juicy, porky sandwiches with a peppery, garlicky bite and a roll that is soft on the inside yet hold up amazingly well to the moist, succulent pork inside. The roll also had a signature bump on the end that was crunchy. No kidding, I went there with friends and had 2 1/2 sandwiches in one sitting! I worked around the corner from them and I loved the whole "eat while you stand or get it to" go set up. They had two big containers or pickled and hot peppers that you could load up on as well for free. They closed for a while and renovated and now its set up more like a bar/restaurant. The sandwiches are about $1.50 more and still very good, but the last time is was there, I felt like they may have skimped a bit on the meat. Still one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I'd take it over a cheesesteak anyday.

I'm going nuts with hunger for a cheesteak in any form from anywhere!
But, I'm outa luck. All I can hope for here in Dallas is a great Chopped BBQ beef sandwich. Oh well, I guess I should count my blessings. You guy's don't get the BBQ that we have access to.
Hey, I'll be happy to send someone a great chopped beef sandwich from (the original) Sonny Bryan's in exchange for one of your (best) cheesesteak sandwiches. I like mine wit (everything).

I have never had a "cheesesteak" in Virginia. I agree that Al's and Mario's are good, but both call their product a "steak and cheese". I don't really know why. By the way, Mario's has no indoor seating, somewhat restricting its usefulness in cooler weather (the sandwich drips to much for me to eat it in the car). Al's does have some seating. I would add a third place to the list - The Broiler on Columbia Pike just west of Glebe. They are also good and they have seating. The one question about Broiler is will they stay good, they seem to have changed owners.

To me, Chick's was really good, but on the next bus, behind Gaetano's and DiVello's in Medford. They won an award 3 years ago for the best cheesesteak in the area, so I tried them once. Their sandwiches were not quite as big, and the taste not quite as good as Gaetano's.

Howard: Thanks for posting this. I trust your opinion on "out of the Philly area" cheesesteaks immensely. Now I know I can leave The Real Thing off of my list of places to try.

gee my gf was craving a cheesesteak saturday so we got in the car and drove from nyc to 4th n south, waited on line at jim's each had one there and got two to go. well worth the drive.

You should have tried Steve's in the Northeast on Bustleton. You would have gotten there sooner. And there is a Jim's just a few blocks away.

I finally found my way up to Kappy's after a stop at REI which is across the street on Butler Pike. CW is correct, it is a very good cheesesteak. Had mine plain with provolone. Good steak to bread ratio- not too little, not too much. Very good roll. A gorgeous day to play hooky from the office and sit outside. Now whenever I go to REI it will be a tough decision between a zep at Lou's or Eve's or a steak sandwich from Kappy's. Thanks for the recommendation CheeseWit. BTW they also have Bassetts ice cream.

I'm glad you enjoyed Kappy's. Lou's and Eve's are great for Zeps. So the choice really is between having a Zep (hoagie-like) and a cheesesteak.
