The hot dog roots of Carl's Jr

For us So Cal Baby Boomers, we recall when Carl's Jr was just a regional family owned chain with locations in only Metro L A
When Carl Archer began his little stand in the 40s, it was first a hot dog stand then he began selling hanburgers and their former signature California Roast Beef sandwich, sadly discountinued in the early 1980s

I think it's a travesty that Carl's Jr since partnering with Hardee's and becoming another multi-national eliminated their first menu item. the hot dog

I think it's Karcher not Archer and you're talking about his earlier restaurants not Carl's Jr.

They bought Hardee's so it's their menu and has nothing to do with the old Hardee's (good or bad ?)

I see you are the type of poster who likes to insult and create flame wars which I won't lower myself to, but you are the one obviously out of touch because until the 1990s Carl's Jr still sold hot dogs at their So Cal locations and the lobbys are always filled with photos of Carl's origins selling hot dog. Carl's jr is the hot dog and hamburger stand side of Carl, it was designated as "jr" to distinguish them from his sit down full scale restaurant he had for a short time in the 1940s

I worked for Carl's Jr in the early 70s when the family and Carl were still hands on and they required their new employees to learn the history of the company as they were very proud of their humble origins

It is Karcher, not Archer... And it did start out with hot dogs!

By the way in our area Hardees now serves a chili dog with mustard and onions for $1.29. It's probably a 2 oz dog or maybe a bit larger. I've had several and they're not half bad.

They use to serve them and fried chicken at the local Hardee's until they went to the all burger menu years ago. I was not too keen on the fried chicken but liked the dogs.

2 1/4lb chili dogs for $3 @ hardees in my area. Haven't tried them and probably won't..but I miss the chicken at $4.99 for 8 pieces with 4 biscuits. It sure was a cheap and decent lunch.

Hardee's is the closest fast food place to my house, and Sweeney loves it when we go through the drive thru in the truck and I get him a plain burger. Otherwise, I don't eat there.

Aaaaaaaah, you must've lived in So Cal at one time to know about that fab sandwich and I agree with you completely, one of the best sandwiches at a fast food chain ever, nothing at Arby's has ever come close to the California Roast Beef, juicy roast beef, tomato-onions on request and a Anaheim chile slice, Anaheim chiles are mild but tastier than a bell pepper, add a slice of swiss on a tasted sesame bun, yum yum yum.

I've made Cal Roast Beef Sandwich at home but can't get it quite the same. The dressing used was special, not a thousand islands but similar and much superior

Yep, I grew up in Ventura County and had family in Orange County. In the last 70s, we used to always get the Cal Roast Beef Sandwich when we'd go to Carl's Junior.

I did have Arby's when they still did that and they were excellent, no doubt, however we are talking about a specific style of roast beef sandwich that Arby's never had. The California roast beef was sliced roast beef on a toasted sesame round sponge bun, with some kind of mustardy thousand island sauce, a slice of swiss and a slice of an Anaheim chile. You could add tomato and or onion on request

The best roast beef sandwich I have eaten is the legendary 100 year plus still operating Phillipe's Original French Dip in Downtown Los Angeles' Chinatown by Union Station

Tried them Chili Dogs and can say I tried them.

Actually, The California Roast Beef has been brought back. 2 for $5.00. I tried it today. Trust me, it's nowhere near the same thing I remember from when i was in High School. No Sauce. Just a flattened roast beef sandwich with american cheese, tomato, and ortega chili.

I've been craving that little sandwich for almost thirty years, so, when I read lilybean's post I had to run to the phone and call my local Carl's Jr. They said that they'll be bringing it back on October 29th; this will be the longest eight days of my life.

I've also been confused by the fact that Arby's has never carried a version of this. The only ingredient they're missing is the chili. I mean it seems like a natural to at least test market the thing. Oh well, corporate logic.

Don't get your hopes up..I'm telling you, the sandwich is nothing like it used to be. I don't think I'll ever order the cal roast beef again. Guess I'm going back to the standby fav..double western bacon cheeseburger.

On another note..I've complained to Carls Jr. several times about the appearance of the sandwiches when you get them. They never look anything like the pictures and are usually flat and smashed. I'm not a big Mcdonalds fan but the fact that they use a box for the Big Mac makes a huge difference in my opinion. That burger is always pleasing to the eye and looks very similar to its advertisements. I think carls ought to switch to boxes to improve their quality.
