    Wow. Great first post. Welcome?

I don't think you own a restaurant, do you. Well neither do I, however, I do own my own good service business. If I ever describe it to someone as being "annoying" I would hope they slap the crap outta me. Don't of it if you don't love it. Yes, there are frustrations and challenges but that's why it's "a labor of love". Plenty of sacrifices all of wich turn into rewards throughout the course if time. The most frustrating thing for me came before ownership...watching other owners fall short of their potential.

    Hope that helps.

This sounds like a server complaint and a cook complaint.  Neither of which should EVER be an owner's complaint.

Which is a nearly impossible task in today's "us vs. them" society where the thieving ingrates feel entitled to steal.

Employee theft - in a variety of ways - is the most 'annoying' part of owning a restaurant.  Compared to that the "I cracked a tooth and neeed a $7,000 dental implant + 'pain & suffering" are almost an amusement.

Edit:  BTW, welcome to Roadfood.  And good luck in (the once) Happy Valley.

(#1) ... Sometimes we aren't hungry enough to eat a meal by ourselves ... Are you insinuating we should (A) Not come in, or (B) leave half of our food behind ... You are selling a commodity.
(#2) ... Don't say you are "OPEN" if you are not willing to accommodate money-paying guests.

I don't understand the sharing the meal thing. If you are a restaurant owner and this is happening that often, then your servings are likely too large. You could do a couples deal where you bundle an entree with appetizers and a dessert for a discount (you'll be making more than for just one entree). Either way, the customer has ordered their food and paid for it. I really don't see what the problem is. If you have a group of people who are eating and one is just drinking because he/she just ate, would you throw a fit? If you did, these people would likely not come back.

As far as staying open past when you want to close, you can easily close the doors or tell people you aren't taking any more customers. If you're open, then don't bitch about being open. You, as the owner, can set your hours. If you want to close earlier, just adjust your sign to denote that you close half an hour earlier.

The bureaucracy I have to wrangle with annoys me; food trucks are slightly different than b&m restaurants in this regard. Because of the "roach coach" stigma, there are a lot of outdated regulations that I have to deal with.

For those of you who guessed, you are correct, I'm not a restaurant owner...yet.

I'm looking to enter the restaurant industry though. But I'm not sure in what capacity.

Me and a few friends are looking to solve problems, and we're pretty good with computers, so I'm really looking to find out some of the annoying parts of the restaurant industry?

Do you ever wish certain things were different than they are?

Is there some boring task that you feel should simply be automated?

One responses we've gotten so far from restaurant owners is, "my ice machine breaks in the middle of our busiest hour and I have no idea who to get it fixed with and how quick they will be here"

Thank you for all the responses so far and it's great to be a part of roadfood!

I am an owner also...and shared plates ARE profit.  Would you rather a couple go somewhere else to spend their money?  Cash in the coffers is what it's all about.  I view it the same as a single diner coming in...the register makes noise and we all go home happy.

You could also look at it like you are getting money you wouldn't have otherwise (which I often term as profit). You would also keep customers. I know that if I went in with a group and the owner chef made a big deal about me sharing a meal, I would never go back. You know what they say: people with good experiences tend to tell ten people, people with bad experiences tell 100. You can bet I'd tell everyone who would listen (including posting about it on Facebook), and I'd also make sure to put it in a review on Yelp. Which takes more away from your profits?

The wife and I have usually shared a meal for the last year maybe, we are both trying to eat less so sharing is the best way, we also quit drinking pop a couple months ago so we order water or juice, usually water

    Exactly correct.

That's why Nordstron has such a generous return policy.
For every a-hole who takes advantage of them they gain 10 good customers.
Last time I looked, the Nordstrom family are billionaires.

I am not open yet but all I think about it staying open once I am.  I can imagine there will be challenges to overcome but hopefully nothing to ever frustrate me.  To me, frustration is a situation that you feel powerless over and you hate it because you just have to take it.  One of the best things about being an owner is, if something is not working you can change it immediately.  I have often heard that good help is hard to find and hope to overcome that with good leadership and selecting the right people from the start.  I have worked in the industry for years and know there is a big difference between working the line and being an owner but am still looking forward to opening. There is nothing that can frustrate my passion for selling great food and changing the game a bit.

Me leaving because I get attitude about my woman and I splitting an order will cut into it even more. I am old and cranky, and don't need too much to fill up, and my old lady eats like a bird. By the same token I don't mind dropping a bundle on good food, and I tip very well when I get awesome service.

    The two major sources are:
    1. Food & Beverage going out the back door.
    2. Dipping in the register.

    HERE IS THE SCARIEST STATISTIC!
The Small Business Administration indicates that 60 percent of business failures are a result of employee theft.
I worked in the truck stop industry. Being open 24/7/365 we were especially vulnerable to employee theft.
We estimated one restaurant employee stole over $50K worth of food in a year. He was feeding his family of 7 and all his relatives!

In Northern New Jersey at least, the biggest problem can be opening the restaurant in the first place. While there are certainly honest ones, many local zoning boards have a racket where you have to be represented by an agent on their approved list, and then when you appear before the board, they will table your request for trivial business, time after time after time, each time having to still pay the fee for their "approved" agent.
