I've been thinking about how different nations have different forms of bread: Tortillas from Mexico, Naan from India, "Wonderbread" (white "chewing gum" bread) from USA. What can you add? What is your fav?

I love Middle Eastern breads that are filled with things like lamb and feta and topped with things like sesame seeds and za'atar. Middle Eastern sweet breads are wonderful. Chinese scallion bread is one of our favorites, too. I love any and all ethnic breads. I haven't had one I didn't like.

How about Irish Soda bread, fresh from the oven and dripping with butter? Or almost any bread, fresh from the oven/grill/tala, dripping with butter??

Ummmm....Southern cornbread? Is that ethnic enough? Sure went down well with some chili tonight. ;o) Also, let's hear it for Great Britain's scones, cottage loaf, crumpets, and baps.

NYNM, that GCCB sounds great! Could you give us more info on how it's made? I take cut french bread and spoon on some juice from a roast, or brisket, and then toast it. Anyone else do weird things like this to bread? Joe

Italian bread, still warm, from not one but two places here in Steubenville. Not one loaf I have purchased has made it home unmolested.

Has Wonder Bread changed over time -- or was it always the gummy, vapid, concoction it is today?

This may be off topic and perhaps the dark side coming out, but on occasion while driving around Austin and the local burbs I chance to see a bread truck making deliveries and the brand name is Bimbo bread. I cannot tstifle the guffaws and of course my spouse takes umbridge and we don't speak for a while. Anybody else seen this brand of bread or are these sightingsleft over from my adventures in the the sixties?

Chow Jim Jim: The "Wonderbread" was a joke, but I put it in because many of my friend in Europe make fun of it as "American Bread". Are hamburger buns or hot dog buns better examples of US bread? (they have that Wonderbread consistency, tho...) As yes, crackers, waffles, pretzels are good ideas...

Does anybody know for a fact if there is ANY nutrition -- any benefit, aside from keeping your fingers clean while eating -- to Wonder Bread ???

Well, I go back to the early 50s maybe late 40s with Wonder Bread and yes it has always been soft and you could scrunch it up in what would seemingly be an unbaked dough ball. And it was all the better done that way with grimey hands.
