I think the world's best soup comes from a company in Canada...that's right it's canned, and has been around forever. Habitant French Canadian Style Pea Soup....this is made with yellow peas, nothing like green pea soup, which I also love. The company has been purchased by Campbells but so far they haven't changed anything with the exception that I can't seem to find the bigger squat cans anymore. Try it.....it's the World's best.

I think the best soup is anything that you cook at home. Why is it that home made soup seems to taste so much better than restaurant? Rex in hot, humid, expensive San Diego.

My two favorites are the corn and crab bisque from Prejean's in Lafayette, LA. and the creole onion from Scott's Harbor Grill in Traverse City, MI.

Either Gumbo or Caldo Gallego. Mole de Olla is a close second.

There's the coconut-chicken soup at the Thai of Norcross (GA)...the cioppino at Carine's in Ft. Bragg (CA)...out of the can, I really like Progresso's chickarina.

My wife's oxtail soup. The price of oxtails have substantially increased over the last several years, don't understand exactly why, but boiled oxtails result in the softest beef of all and delicious to
            say the least.

the best soup I ever made was done by turning my fridge on it's side and scooping everything edible(no jars, etc)into a huge stockpot, add a bayleaf and you are in business....works best after holiday dinners or rained-out tailgate parties

I remember Habitant pea soup. I haven't seen it in more than 30 years. It was wonderful stuff.

                        Dearfolk,
Today I had the onion soup at The Normaltown Cafe'. PERFECTION! I left Kelli a note enclosing a hug; she deserved it.

The best soup I have ever tasted, was in a little German place in Sea Side California. It is called Stammtisch, they made a Brussel Sprout soup, I swear it was the very best in taste, texture and appearance. It was seasoned perfectly and you could taste the sprouts but not overwhelmingly.

Next best is Duartes in Pescadero Ca. The cream of Artichoke soup is excellent. And while you are there you have to try the Olallie pie which is also worth a trip.

Had to look up Seaside on a map but found it in what looks like the middle of Monterey. Is that the right place 'cause I'm maybe only the second person on earth (after you, I guess) who loves Brussel sprouts? Since I also like German food a lot, that soup sounds like something I might almost drive to Monterey for (almost).

Every dish I have tried there is outstanding, but that soup...magnificient, if you like brussel sprouts.

You can mail-order Habitant split-pea soup (and an astonishing variety of other things) from hometownfavorites.com. I've used them before; they're excellent to work with.

On the other side of the culinary world, back a few years [decades] ago when I was a Sinophile [wannabe, whatever] I had some of the most awesome hot-and-sour soup in some restaurant I walked into in NYC's Chinatown. Don't know the name or place -- it was just one of those one-off walk-ins. Thinking about it, maybe it was one of those Americanized Chinese recipes -- I never found it in Chinese eateries in Asian cities. Whatever -- it was good.

The Andersen's Pea Soup near Santa Barbara is in Buellton, which is about an hour north of SB. Really good!! I think there's also an AJ Spur's there which is pretty tasty.

This is my first post to this forum. I like road trips and road trip food, so I guess I'm in the right place. Pea Soup Andersen's is one of my favorite road trip stops, so I wnated to post what my recent research (internet and first-hand) into this California-based chain has uncovered. Unfortunately, only two of the four restaurants are still operating as a Pea Soup Andersen's. The Carlsbad location is now a TGI Friday's, and the Selma (just South of Fresno) location is another restaurant. Both buildings do still have the trademwark windmill. Santa Nella (I-5) and Buellton (101) are the last holdouts. I hope they last forever. Good road trip memories, and the Santa Nella location is just about the only noteworthy stop on the entire stretch of Highway 5 between Stockton and the Grapevine just North of LA. The patty melt at Andersen's is top notch, by the way, if you are into them. My favorite way to order the pea soup is in the sourdough bread bowl w/ five toppings. Unfortunately, they usually only offer this option on weekends.

The awesome hot-and-sour soup in NYC's Chinatown could have been at the restaurant at 40 E. Broadway (it had an impossible to remember Chinese name, at least for this foreign devil). It was better than I ever found in Asia or in California. Their shrimp with chili sauce was equally awesome (as Iron Chef fans know that was invented by Chef Chin’s father).

That was back in the 1970’s and early 80’s. I was in NYC recently for the fist time in years and it was gone.

My gramma -- from Russia made the most wonderful matzoh ball soup with matzoh balls the size of marbles (just the right size for a mouthful) which floated. There were also chunks of chicken and veggies in the broth. Second best, her beef borsch. Wonderful in winter! I still make them but -- I guess that they would taste better if she were here to keep me company.

I haven't had it in quite some time, but my favorite soup would have to be Pasta Pizul (sp?) at Schiavone's Casa Mia--just point your browser to http://www.schiavones.com--which was a tomato-flavored pasta soup. Since I tended to forget the name (and still do today, to an extent!) I used to call it "Middletown soup" since the restaurant was in the Ohio city with that name.

That's pasta e fagiole (pasta and beans), called pasta fazool by some people known as Italians.
