Good list. Interesting that there's only one entry from New Orleans. Must have been a very short trip. I think you can start to amend the list by going to the joint near your job that you mentioned never having gone to in another thread. Must be a story behind why you haven't been there.

I sat down awhile ago with all my different editions of Roadfood going back to the earliest editions and started counting places. Factoring in the website reviews, my total is over 300, a number which has been significantly beefed up by the inclusions on Roadfood.com, particularly those from states like Connecticut, where I spend a lot of time. In the coming months I'll be be making Roadfood pilgramages to New Orleans and Utah and am looking forward to chowing down.

After months of wracking my brain, using process of elimination, yahoo maps and yellow pages along with surfing the net for restaurant menus, I think I finally found the restaurant where I experienced the New Orleans combo back in 1991 and here it is!

The below is sad...I looked throughly through the restaurant listing and these are the only places I've been to on it:

Fralinger's - Atlantic City, NJ (not really a restaurant, but it's still listed in the restaurant section, so...I'm desperate here)
Mastori's - Bordentown, NJ
Geno's - Philly
Pat's - Philly
Jim's Steaks (yo! whatchoo want on yo' steak?) - Philly
Charcoal Pit (both the one in Bear & the one in Wilmington) - Delaware
The Crab Claw - St. Michaels, MD

It's not that I really have a lot of catching up to do (well, I do...), but that many roadfood-type places that I have been to aren't listed in the official restaurant listing. Unless they're in the Insider section, and I will definitely be joining that this year.

They're mentioned throughout the forums, though.

RE: These are the places I visited on Roadfood 2005/01/02 20:06:54 (permalink)
Haven't completed an update in over two years. Let's see where things are now.  120+ new places since my last update - and up over 400 now. I do go to a lot of duplicates, though. I have decided to reorganize by state, rather than alphabetically. I will edit in the newest additions in green and restaurants that I have previously visited but the review is new to either the latest book or web site will be listed in red and bold the favorites. indicates a place that is now closed. indicates one of the very few clunkers on my list.

In following the lead from stanpnepa, places that I have visited that are surely worthy of the Roadfood seal of approval, but have yet to earn, include the following:

** ate at another location -- not the one listed on roadfood.com

I'm not riding tall with the big boys in this thread, but I'll take pushing 300 or so...and counting. Seeing as how my screen name has become a verb, I want partial credits for all of the places that I TRIED to go to and were closed when I got there (i.e. Sears in SF, BBQ King in Charlotte, Mint Bar in Sheridan, WY, New Zion Missionary Baptist Church BBQ in Huntsville, TX - most recent one....and more!)

My favorite - after all a world of new eating is probably still either Katz's or Peter Luger. I know that they have their detractors, but I will still pick them over most any other choice, and will go out of my way to get there, if I am within 50-60 miles.

Also, I have a few places that I am not sure if they are listed in older editions of Roadfood, but they appear on other people's lists or I cannot figure out why I chose to go there (H&H Bagels in NYC, JG Melon's in NYC, Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, VA, Chap's Pit Beef in Baltimore, Railhead BBQ in Fort Worth, etc.). If anyone can lay claim to these guys being in an older edition, please let me know.

chezkatie - Us folks out here in the wilderness are really hurt that you haven't been anywhere but to one place in the windy state of Wyoming. Come on out, and that goes for all you folks in the middle and eastern parts of this nation of ours. We really do have some great places to eat. I will personally escort (for a very large fee) you to some here in little old New Mexico, and our western neighbor of Arizona. Honest, no passports needed!!

I am not a marketing guy for the Sterns but if I were them, I would use this as a advertisng thing. It indicates the power this site has.

I personally have visited many sites discussed on this forum directly due to what I have read.

I'd like to go through and see where I've been. Is there a way to list all the restaurant on the site at one time? Any search I do gets limited to 300 restaurants. Don't have the patience to search 50 states one at a time. Has someone already compiled a list for us to share?

I am really impressed with the large listings of places visted that been posted. I also keep thinking the amount of gas that was used to visit all these sites. I bet the people that made these listings get HUGE Christmas presents from the oil companies. Ha Ha!!

Garry, I don't know about the others, but I assure you, my list was comprised using pretty modest means. I travel for work a lot, which allows me the opportunity to get to places that I would have a difficult time doing otherwise. For my personal travel, I have access to airline miles and hotel points that were accrued on my business travel, thereby making some of the journeys a lot easier. Beyond that, though, there isn't much. I make a very modest living, but I live within my means.

Someone commented in wanderingjew's recent trip log that they wished they would be able to do trips like this when they retire, leaving one to assume that it is not realistic to do this now. While I don't make much money, I do get a lot of time off from work (20 days vacation, plus sick time, plus major US holidays, PLUS the week between Christmas and New Year's, and the days before and after Thanksgiving). Frankly, it is more time off than I know what to do with. So, where some people will save for two years to have enough money to take their one or two week vacation to Hawaii -- I don't see the value in that. I would rather spend my time doing the things that I like more frequently, even if they are not as exotic. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Money to the oil companies, so far, is the least of my worries - for me, it is making sure that I have a steady stream of airline miles and hotel points!

Well, the majority of these places I visited when gas was still under $1.50 a gallon. Remember THOSE days????

RE: These are the places I visited on Roadfood 2006/07/08 23:39:06 (permalink)
I never thought to compile a list until pork tenderloin sandwiches recently. I get around both vacation and in my job. 16 states already this year driving a camper van some 7,000 miles on two major trips. I have probably forgotten more places than I remember. I think in the past 15 years I have been in every state except Hawaii. Of course I ate in quite a few of them. I have the Stern's RoadFood book. I should mark what I can remember. And yes I have been to the Mug'n'Bun numerous times over a 40+ year span but I have yet to include them in a recent pork tenderloin sandwich tour. Wanderingjew is probably right about the pork tenderloin sandwich there considering what I now know about most of the other Indiana tenderloins. I will know for sure next year.

RE: These are the places I visited on Roadfood 2006/07/09 10:48:12 (permalink)

I feel that I have been fortunate to have lived in cities or areas where restaurants make the list. San Francisco to the L.A. area, Nawlins to N.Y and at the moment, Connecticut. My wife was from Memphis and took me on a Que tour there. So reading the lists mentioned by all of you gives me a reason to say "Me too!" Last week was Hot Dog Johnny's (N.J.) and yesterday I found Blackies in nearby Cheshire. Where I live now seems to be a good place for many Roadfood joints. Many of these I plan to check out as I am new to this site. Hot dog joints, pizza, diners, fish houses and more dominate.

I plan on getting the current edition of the Roadfood Guide, but I have been hinting that I hope to get it for a birthday present. However I have another idea recently that has come to me, dining via GPS..! My little dashboard device has the ability to list and direct me to many places to go to eat within about a 25 mile radius. It lists many types of restaurants and with no surprise, Roadfood recommended destinations.
What I found interesting among the selections was the section listing BBQ!! I did not know that there were so many places that have BBQ menus, and to be honest I am kind of leary of their ability to do it right. But one needs to be adventurous and try something new.

I think that GPS dining is a different idea worth trying as even here, there are many places waiting to be discovered and have yet to be reviewed. I will search for certain types of restaurants within Connecticut and other states, only to discover that there is no listing for what I am looking for.
Maybe Thai is not considered Roadfood, but I am surprised to find that there are no listings for pizza in California!!!
One question. Has anyone used the Microsoft Streets & Trips (2004/2005) package listed on the homepage? Some reviews at Amazon seem to be less than enthusiastic. Is there another CD-ROM that is worth checking out?

As a former resident from the Bay Area and California in general, I find it odd that there are a total of about three to four restaurant listings for the categories of Asian, Chinese and Japanese for the WHOLE state. That's not right.
There is not a category for Thai for any state. I agree that there should be some listings. Where I came from, there was a good restaurant of these types on every block and you could have thrown in Mexican and Italian too. You did not need a Roadfood guide, just a good nose...

I will not argue about pizza, as I live close enough to New Haven and agree that east coast style rules. Heck, years ago, I brought a pizza on board a plane as carry-on because I knew that there there was no substitute. It was an aromatic flight....

My point about dining by GPS is that it does list many restaurants within my radius. It does not have as many categories, but last night I passed Ted's Steamed hamburgers and Blackie's on my destination to the Thai restaurant where I had my stomach set on the Crispy Duck in curried coconut milk. I made up for passing those places by stopping at Denmo's for a chili-burger and chocolate malt. That little machine lists all those places and the mileage and when to turn. It lists places that have yet to be reviewed here.
Fortunately it does not count calories...

Mark,

The problem with your statement is that it doesn't take into account where the bulk of the reviews come from. The people who own this site make their living selling books promoting local regionalized (and predominantly American) restaurants. Yes, there are user-submitted reviews, but all reviews need to go through a submission process and meet certain guidelines. Could Thai be considered a regional food - perhaps in some places, but other than volume and availability is there anything particularly regional about Thai, Chinese, sushi or most other ethnic foods? Is there something that makes Thai in Seattle different or unique from Thai in Birmingham, AL?

Stevekoe has a new name!!!!

I think that certain areas of the country "hit the nail on the head" when it comes to good quality ethnic cuisine. Perfect example would be your (and my) preference for Chinese food on Long Island. How about the Cuban food down in Miami and Tampa? I wonder if they can duplicate the quality in Salt Lake City. Seattle has a significant Asian population and a multitude of multi ethnic Asian Cuisine. I've had Thai food in NY, Pittsburgh and Providence, although here in Providence for reasons I'm still trying to ascertain these eateries will also serve Chinese and Vietnamese food as well. I've yet to find a restaurant that can duplicate my Thai Restaurant eating experiences I had while living in Seattle. I just noticed a new Thai Restaurant is opening near me here in East Greenwich, it's actually walking distance from my condo and I'll actually be walking right by it this evening. I look forward to trying it but wonder if it's going to miss that "Je Ne Sais Quoi".

Look at the explosion of Mexican/Latin American restaurants and foodstands all across the country. With the influx of Migrants..legal and not, The number of places to find that type of food has expanded with them. As with all Mom and Pops, some are wonderful and some 'aren't'. I would have a hard time trying all the taco stores in southern Indiana, much less around the Louisville area. AND This area is not any different in population shift than many urban areas in the South/MidWest.

The Hispanic population has boomed in Knoxville but somehow the food stands have not. To my knowledge, there are no specific taco stands around K town. I sort of wish there was.

Wow, these are some impressive lists. Mine is not so long, but we did hit a couple of them recently on a vacation trip to Montreal (via the Jersey turnpike and the NY State Thruway). It was great to search on this site for some possible places enroute, and both we tried turned out very well:

- Stash - Polish restaurant in Montreal - terrific, and 1/2 block from our hotel
- Mastoris Diner in Bordentown, NJ - hands down, the best diner EVER

and a couple that are local to us:

- The Charcoal Pit in Bear, DE - an old fashioned hamburger joint with great ice cream treats and honest to God jukebox station at every table.
- Pat's Steaks and Jim's Steaks in Philly. Pat's was downright dreadful - there's a thousand corner joints that make a better cheesesteak than that. They are coasting along on name recognition alone. Jim's was pretty good, though (but a terrible bum's rush through the line - you'd better know what you want or they are pretty impatient about explaining the choices.)
