I also had to make some similar decisions. Last summer I stopped at a Burgerville in Vancouver, WA, but I all we got were some milkshakes. So I don't count it.

I have some more places to add to my list from page 2:

Original Pancake House, Portland, OR
Riverside BBQ, Seaside, OR
Mo's Annex, Newport, OR
Jake's Famous Crawfish, Portland, OR
Greasy Spoon Cafe, Langlois, OR
Farmhouse Cafe, Tillamook, OR
Sugar Bowl, Scottsdale, AZ
Goody Goody Diner, St. Louis, MO

I tried to go to Poca Cosa and Mi Nidito in Tucson but they were both closed on Monday!! Arrgh! I did go to Mariscos Chihuahua in Phoenix (not Tucson). Does that count? The crab tostada was excellent!
Added in October 2007:
Owl Bar, San Antonio, NM
Golden Crown Panaderia, Albuquerque, NM

Added in January 2008:
Blue Heaven, Key West, FL (Lobster Benedict for breakfast)
Pepe's Cafe and Steak House, Key West, FL (breakfast and dinner)
El Siboney, Key West, FL (Siboney steak)
Alabama Jack's, Card Sound, FL (not official RF place but worth the mention for conch fritters)

I'll be adding some Atlanta places in March 2008!

I also went to Food Life in Chicago's Water Tower, but all I got was a Lemonade.

That is too bad that all you got try at Food Life was the Lemonade. This place is a favorite of mine, even though it can be expensive. I usually get a bowl of soup, a side Caeser Salad, a Thai entree and Bananas Foster for dessert, plus a fruit smoothie to drink. Not too many places you can do all that at!

I noticed that you have visited a place I very, very much want to try, Mario's Basque Bar-B-Q in Pendleton, Oregon in 2006. Does he have his own restaurant now? Or did you go to his booth at the Pendleton Round-Up? How was the food?

I went to the booth at round-up. He still caters around town(my wife Trudy has family in Pendleton and they speak highly of him). He does not have a restaurant at this time. The sandwiches at his booth at round-up grounds are an annual highlight.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping Mario would have his own place by now. This has to be one of the more difficult Roadfood places to hit. Looks like I am going to attend the Pendleton Round-Up one of these years.

My Hat's off to Roadfood.com for expanding my eating choices. I have enjoyed many places, that I may or may not have stopped at , but Roadfood guided me to better eating and that's what I think this venue is all about. My Favorite website !!!!!!!!!!!

The count stands as follows:

The Big Three

Buffetbuster 619 (!!)
Wanderingjew 218
Carjunking 205

Other notables

Mr Chips 129
Pigiron 115
Stanpepa 112

Buffetbuster has probably been to more roadfood restaurants than I have been to total restaurants. 619 equals eating at a different place every day for almost 2 years.

I can't believe you actually did all that counting!

I am almost positive that there are others out there who have been to more Roadfood places than me. After the conversation I had with Bruces Bilmes in Nashville, I believe he is one of them. Bruce, I would love to see your list someday, if you can find the time.

wanderingjew-
I do understand why you might not want to include places that you yourself submitted the reviews. But considering your reputation and high standards, I'm fairly certain that whatever place you review must be Roadfood worthy. I think you should count it.

It took all of less than a minute. I just highlighted and copy/pasted your listings into Microsoft Excel, and it rendered a figure for me. Would I have done it otherwise? Hell no! I only wish I had the lifestyle that affords you to visit all these establishments. You and Wanderingjew should collaborate on a restaurant blog, it would be very interesting reading.

Roadfood places are looked at w/ the same regard as any other place. I've had horrible meals at highly recommended places and gone two miles away for a great meal. And I am talking about tiny towns in east TN. I read the recommendations but temper them w/ the fact the review may be five plus years old, the owners have changed (IE Coffee Cup min Charlotte which is now double the price of the Waffle House and half the quality).

The Stern's review of the Coffee Cup is not 5 years old, the review is probably a little more than 6 months old. They re-reviewed it after the new ownership.

I'll be stopping in Charlotte early next year to visit some old friends. I may not have a whole lot of time there but I know I'll be stopping at the Coffee Cup and will see for myself.

Not that ANYONE will ever catch BuffetBuster, but my total is now up to 187. I keep an Excel of these things mostly for my amusement, and add five to fifteen per year. This list includes any place in a review entry on this site or listed in one of the Stern's food books (Eat Your Way, Roadfood, etc.).

That is some fine eating you have done. I would like to see you update your list when you get the chance. I am a little envious that you made it to places like Eddie's, Sri Lanka Curry House and Miss Hulling's Cafeteria that are now closed that I didn't make it to. Was the food as hot at Sri Lanka as I read and heard?

O.K. here they are, 577 and counting. The first 226 are from my old version of the Roadfood book. The next 336 are newer ones from the Restaurants tab above. The last few are from Roadfood books I do not own.

This compares with the 342 from my older travel food book called "The Best Places to Eat in America." I know I'm getting nutty; checking off places in the two books is starting to be more important to me than the food itself.

Buffetbuster, an updated list is now on Page 1. I hope to add a few more as early as next week! I'm in the process of compiling other great non-Roadfood listed meals, so maybe I'll post those somewhere or other down the line.

The gumbo at Eddie's remains the best bowl of soup I've ever had. (Got to get back to New Orleans soon. It may be the best food city in the country!).

The food was fiery but very tasty at Sri Lankan Curry House. The waitress warned my friend (who likes things spicier than me) to go with a medium hot. He did and went through four pitchers of water!!!

Miss Hulling's was a great cafeteria with comfort food and desserts that would just make you smile!

Thanks for the updated list. I genuinely really enjoy looking at other peoples lists and am always curious about places I haven't been to. Where are you headed next week where you hope to add more places?

We're doing a one day trip to Northern CT and Southern MA. I'm hoping to hit Dottie's Diner @ Phillips for a bit of breakfast and lunch (donuts and chicken pie), Blackie's (hot dogs for dinner) and Big Dipper (ice cream for dessert).

BB -

I just started reading this thread. I thought that counting the number of places you have visited was hard enough. You want to see lists!!

I guess I will have to create one to post here. I started counting yesterday and got up to 57 and I had not gotten any further west than VA. I will start my list and post it as soon as I have the time.

It sounds like you are going to have quite a list. I can't wait to see it.

Sounds like you will be doing some really good eating next week. I'm excited about my weekend which will include return visits to old favorites in Ohio like Bun's, G & R Tavern and Swenson's.

That's a pretty arrogant comment...
This is how I've kept a tally of roadfood places that I've visited. I think most of us who have responded to this particular thread have presented quite a few reviews via trip reports.

I've never kept lists but I have photographed pork tenderloin sandwiches and walleye sandwiches in the past couple of years so could count up those places. I know I am over 50 in pork tenderloins photographed alone and have about a half dozen where I never got a picture.

The question. Do you only count those in a Stern's book or review here or do you count all places you consider roadfoad?

Davydd,

I count all the restaurants that have been reviewed here as well as the restaurants from the Roadfood books. The only ones I don't include are the restaurants posted for the first time on Roadfood as a result of a review that I completed (so far there are only 2)

BTW, thanks for the info on the Lake Superior Circle tour

Davydd-
All the places on my list have appeared in one of Jane & Michael's restaurant guide books or reviewed here on Roadfood. There are a few in which I ate, like Breakfast Club in Dayton, in which the review has been archived for one reason or another.

If you ever did decide to make up a list of all the places you have sampled the pork tenderloin, I'm sure many of us here, including me, would love to see it.

WJ,

I think you should include your 2 as well. As one of the premier posters on this forum, I've followed some of your suggestions (most recently Ichiban in PB) and have to say you know what you are writing about. I trust your judgment.
