RE- The early electronic calculators. I got a "Bomar Brain" handheld calculator in 1972. $99. It had 4 rechargeable batteries and an AC charger plug-in unit. Unplugged, it just fit into a shirt pocket (tight-squeeze) without its little zipper case. The charge would only last a few hours, so if you left it on for any length of time, you could count on needing the charger. RE- Church Keys- We used the term to cover the "Punch a hole in the Can" type, NOT the bottle top flipper you illustrated. HOWEVER, in today's "Multi-tasking World" it seems that having the punch-thru device on one end and the bottle-top flipper on the other end of a "combination tool" seems to fill the Church Key definition.

Those are the type of curls Claire Hummel had in third grade. I loved to dip them into the inkwell on my desk.

Well, for the longest time she couldn't figure out how the backs of her blouses got ink on them. But, considering her family owns Hummel Bros., it's not hard to understand her density.

Back in the day we had a truck come up our street with a photographer. I think it was from one of the local dairies. They'd take our picture and the next week we'd receive a calendar with our picture at the top under the name of the dairy. Free! Any free things any more?

A calendar from the Chinese restaurant. A pretzel rod from the bank tellers when I make a deposit for my parents. They've been there for a long time.

CC Both my Scotties know to stick their heads out the left-side window at the Bank's drive thru...even in the outer lanes where they use the pneumatic tubes to send and receive stuff. The ladies inside ALWAYS have dog biscuits to put in the carrier when they return my receipts... And Duff and Demi always Wag their Thank Yous.

That's so cute. I hope I've been getting pretzel rods. I always asked the tough questions... Excuse me. How do the floors stay so cold in the summer? Excuse me. If you close the vault door on your hand how do you get it open? Excuse me. This is not a window. Where is the next window? Excuse me. This is not a rope. Excuse me. Are you allowed to eat lunch in the vault? Excuse me. Do you mail the Christmas Club money to Santa?

Why is a shot of liquor called a belt? Complimentary preserved kumquats and pineapple in creme de mente in Chinese restaurants served as dessert. A whole half of an almond on an almond cookie. What's with this half of a half stuff?

mar52 Why is a shot of liquor called a belt? Because belt is slang for a punch or wallop, and when you toss back a shot of whiskey you get a belt.

Remember when a lot of us used to play Old Maid? Most of the time it was those tiny 2" or so cards in the little boxes for kids rather then the full size cards. That became sexist and not pc when my girls were in elementary school. The card game plaid with the same rules sold for kids then was turned into Donkey at the time.

Dawn, Are you saying that "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" used to be called " Pin the Tail on the Old Maid"??? That sounds like something Michael Hoffman would do to the girl who's hair he dipped in the inkwell. I certainly never interupted my Bible Study long enough for such rowdy action...but I KNOW that M H did.

I suppose Eliza Jane Wilder from Little House on the Prairie would frown on playing War & Spit. Can we still hit a PiƱata or should we talk it into giving out candy?

I went thru the Pinata thing a few years back, when one of my daughters did the "I am the Mom who is sure that MY son is better than all the other little demons in the grandkid pool" . She made the others wait while her 9 yr old son took 4 extra swings, the last one with no blindfold...he still missed..,. before yielding to the next grandchild, who was 2 years younger and half his size... who promptly bashed the thing open with one mighty swing (Blindfolded). The rest of the kids just grabbed for the candy..the overly protected grandson cried to his mother that he didn't get any...Note- He didn't dive in with the others trying to get it for himself...so his mother took candy from other kids and gave it to her son. That whole generation og grandkids has not forgotten the incident...and a payback is lurking somewhere. Yuppie, overly protective moms are really hard to deal with.

My Brother gave me two black eyes...in the same day. The first with a toy gun that shot backwards while he set the target with a small mirror. I stood all the way over there...so I was safe. That was one. Don't cry...we'll play catch. That was two. He never got the baseball glove back...after I had to use it for all the ice.
