This doesn't belong on that.

It's irritating when people say no ketchup on a hot dog, no sauce on a steak. Yes, on some things like a Chicago dog with ketchup would taste bad, but so what? If that's what they want, let them have it.

I can take it to extremes where a real hamburger or a real hot dog shouldn't even have a bun. Mayo on a hoagie/sub? Forget it. Only oil and maybe vinegar. BBQ pizza, spaghetti with meat sauce? Nope. They are only abominations of the original. How dare anyone eat spaghetti with meat sauce? That's for children and uneducated adults. We all know that tagliatelle is served with bolognese.

Okay, I'm done venting :D

Spaghetti with meat sauce?  Sounds like something at Olive Garden.

gostillerz, what it ACTUALLY IS is that when you put steak sauce on a steak, I don't care how little, the steak doesn't TASTE like the steak itself. it only tastes like the sauce.
if you think you need sauce to moisten up the steak, you're eating shoe leather.
as for ketchup on a hot dog, well......every once in a while I like a 7-11 1/4 lb hot dog with ketchp& relish. EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.

I've never understood people telling someone other than themselves they are not allowed to eat anything...but then I also don't understand people telling someone other than themselves they are not allowed to smoke, or drink, or have an abortion, either. I figure if you aren't forcing ME to eat it, I don't much give a rip what YOU do to YOUR food. I may shake my head in amazement and talk about it later, but it has no effect whatsoever on me as long as I don't have to put it in my mouth.

I heartily agree, felix4067.  As long as it in no way affects me, what you do with your life is strictly up to you.  I might suggest something to you as a friend, but that is my limit.  If you decide to eat live earthworms with chocolate sauce on them, I may turn my head so my stomach doesn't get queazy, but then it is totally up to you.  There are just too many important things to be concerned about that actually affect other people.

If putting sauce on a steak no longer makes it taste like steak, then the same goes for burgers, dogs, basically everything. My grandfather used to put ketchup on grilled chicken. Weird? Definitely, but I'm not going to chastise the guy for it.

I am the supreme advocate of ALL sauces on the side.
My main (!?) pet peeve is someone "decorating" the whole basket of fries with ketchup.
Yark.    Edited to add that something that naturally COMES WITH a sauce, ie: Something Benedicted..  I ask for EXTRA sauce on the side.

So is that an aesthetic problem, or are they forcing you to eat it? Does it directly affect your basket of fries if someone at the next table does it? Just curious.

I ran chicken fried steak with garlic mash & cream gravy for a special one day last week, a guy ordered it, then asked for the ketchup, poured it all over everything
Had a guy stop for breakfast on Friday, just got back from the doctor, told him he needed to loose 15 lbs, asked what I had low fat...He ordered a 3 egg omlette, with cheese, chili and smothered in country gravy!
They pay, I don't have to watch them eat it....

You are in business, and I can understand your position. But, as just someone who prepares food for people to eat, though not in the "business" of feeding them, I can tell you that if anyone came into my house for dinner and poured some condiment all over the food I prepared that person's plate would be removed immediately and the offender would be booted the hell out of my house.

I'll never understand the draw for ketchup other than to perhaps doctor the taste of typical frozen card-board like frozen-potato products that basically tastes like grease (why bother in the first place?).  In reality, it's just corn syrup and salt with some tomato paste added for color.

It has its places. On corned beef hash, for instance. And mixed with horseradish to make a cocktail sauce.

If these are your thoughts on ketchup, what do you think about ranch dressing (which more and more people are now using on all types of food, rather than just on salads)?

mjambro, I don't use ketchup as much as I did maybe 10 years ago, but yesterday I had an order of fries and I poured ketchup on the plate so I could drag my fries through it.  For me, it's definitely a sense memory type of thing.  Ketchup was at every family picnic for burger and yes, even dogs (Central NY, you know).  And most mom & pop burger places we went to as a family almost always found us with an order of fries on the table drizzled with ketchup.  Not out of a big mouth bottle, mind you, but squirted from a red bottle with the fine tip so that only a thin layer would end of on the fries and not big globs.  HUGE difference.  The flavor of ketchup doesn't exactly move me but the memories it stirs up sure does.

The steak one is really just a burger, so I could understand that, but not on the others.
