Very moving sermon by the reverend. However his history is a bit shaky. It was not the colonies fighting the mother country; it was the United States fighting Great Britain - we had been independent from Great Britain for about 31 years in 1814. The entire British fleet consisted of 16 ships , including non-fighting ships, involved in the attack on Ft McHenry. There were hundreds of British warships stationed all over the world that did not take part in any actions on the Chesepeake Bay. Francis Scott Key was a civilian accompanying the official representative of the US governemnt, Col. John Skinner, in attempting to secure the release of a single American prisoner, Dr. William Beanes. There were, no doubt, other American prisoners on the ship from which Key observed the attack on Ft McHenry, but there is no direct mention of them in any history of the events that I have read. Francis Scott Key was not on a ship where the British Admiral would have been found - he was on a ship almost 5 miles to the rear of the attacking fleet - a fine vantage point to observe the battle but not one from which he could have had any contact with the admiral. There is no mention of women and children in the fort, except that one woman, carrying supplies to the soldiers in the fort was killed in the attack - the garrison consisted of about 100 men. Women carrying supplies to soldiers was common practice in those days. Key did not row out to the British ship ; he sailed - it was a haul of over 20 miles. The Washington quote about "American christian soldiers" seems to be an amalgum of several quotes from Washington - none of them containing the word"christian". Te reverend's sermon would be a lot more compelling if he only adhered to the real history of the "Star Spangled Banner" and did not stoop to making up a fairy tale about it. The true story is moving enough - it needs no "christian"embellishments. Cheers, John There are several

That's interesting Joe, please cite your source of these quotes. Of course neither of them match what the reverend quoted. Cheers, John

seafarer john But still no response to the reverends fairy tales... Cheers, John John, We get it already. We really don't need the socialist propaganda every time someone mentions Christ. Try to enjoy the sermon in the spirit in which it was given. This is a good one though, trying to prove that Washington wasn't a Christian? I hope you have a very special day tomorrow. Joe
