Thumann Ripper - Best Dog on Planet Sat, 10/1/05 1:53 PM (permalink)
I was born & raised in Northern New Jersey & remember many fine days eating Deep Fried Thumann Hot dogs (Rippers). I have spent the last 20+ years living in different parts of the country but I could never find a dog as good as the Thumann brand.

I have recently purchased a restaurant in Albuquerque, NM & decided to take action into my own hands. I found a Broker who could ship me my Thumann's. I did this for 2 reasons: 1) I am selfish & I want to be able to enjoy the crispy skin & juicy meat of the deep fried dog whenever I felt 2) I wanted to introduce this great style dog to the southwest where Green Chile goes on everything BUT my Deep Fried Ripper. I buy the 6:1 Thumann Dog that is made just for Deep Frying & place it a beautiful toasted bun with Kraut, Relish & a Special Onion Sauce that I make.

I must say that educating New Mexico on the Thumann brand is very fulfilling.......literally.

Thanks for the input! Now I'm curious of what that "Special" onion sauce is that ya make...

      Bill,

Good luck in New Mexico. Have the people there been receptive to this dog? Not all people like it. I know someone who worked at Callahans while in college, but preferred the Thumann's dog at Hiram's across the street (Callahans uses Sabrett beef and pork). He opened a hot dog restaurant in Pittsburgh with the idea of selling the Thumann's ripper. The people there did not like it as they were used to a heartier, spicier dog. He switched to an all beef, 6 to a lb Sabrett and wound up doing pretty good. The deep fried ripper may be an aquired taste for some.

By the way, where did you eat this dog while in Jersey? It's served at a number of places. My guess is Rutt's Hut or Hirams. I like Rutt's because they are cooked to different degrees of doneness. I usually get the "weller" or well done dog.
