Toad in the Hole Sat, 04/18/09 10:44 AM (permalink)
Lovely British brunch, lunch, or dinner food!

8 links favorite thyme/sage flavored sausages
1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt and 1 tsp pepper
1 heaping tsp thyme
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1 tsp dry mustard
onion gravy mix or make your own

First, place the links in a metal pan, I use an 8x8 350F for 30 minutes, turning
so they get nice and brown.  I use these links:

Then, while they are baking, make your batter with the eggs, flour, salt, pepper, mustard, thyme
milk.  Mix well and let sit on side, it will look lumpy, you can take a fork time to time and
press out the lumps, but it won't really maktter.

Take the sausages out after 30 minutes and raise the heat to 400F.

Pour in the batter

Put it back in the oven for 40 minutes at 400F.

Meanwhile, make an onion gravy.  I use McCormick, sometimes
I add pan fried onions to it, I did'nt this time:

Take toad out after 40 minutes, looks gorgeous!!

Serve with onion gravy.  You can add some steamed
carrots, or some other vegetable, I like it just like
this with a slice of good hearty bread and butter.
Enjoy.

Jones is my favorite brand of sausage. Another great looking recipe-worthy of a try!

Its funny you should say that, fabulousoyster-I would love to, but I cook more on instinct rather than recipe.Thats why I hate baking-you have to be so precise!

I always thought that a Toad In The Hole was a buttered piece of Italian bread in a hot pan with a hole cut out in the middle and then an egg is cracked into it.  Let it set, and voila, Toad In The Hole.  This version looks yummy too!

I sent the recipe to my Daughter. She loves Yorkshire Pudding and this looks very similiar sans Sausages.

I think this ^^ is Egg In A Frame. We used to do this one all the time @ Girl Scout Camp.

We called those "Bullseyes".....  Used a cookie cutter to cut the center out of a slice of bread and placed the crust area in a buttered pan and dropped an egg into it...  Added a bit more butter to the pan and flipped the thing over....  I also saute`d the center bread pieces in a bit of butter to make a buttery toast crouton garnish....  My kids loved them....

We called the same thing "egg in a basket". I guess basically we all eat the same things with different names.
