Today is National Cereal Day

Today is National Cereal Day. That's because on this date in 1897, Dr. John Kellogg began serving corn flakes to the patients in a mental hospital. His brother William K. Kellogg, who started the cereal company that bears his name, improved on the flakes by adding sugar to them to make them taste better. The two Kellogg guys had some nutty ideas about health, but they did introduce a great new way to incorporate more grains into the modern diet.

Can you imagine how many MILLIONS of tons of corn flakes have been eaten in the over 100 years of existance?
Some of them even eaten by sane people!
What's your favorite cereal, either hot and cold?
Are you a "Slurper", drinking the mlk out of the bowl?

Now I can't decide between Reese's Peanut Butter Puffs and Crunchberries for lunch.

I'm a total kid cereal addict. Those two, along with Apple Jacks, Froot Loops, Cocoa Puffs, and Cookie Crisp are pretty much always in my house. I tend to slurp as an adult because we would be in serious trouble as kids if we did it.

I'm amazed at the prices of a box of cereal! Do any of you buy the "Generic" Cereals in the non-discript plastic bags?

It is a rare one indeed when I do NOT buy store brand, generic, what ever the case may be. In some cases it is nearly half what the name brand costs. I did splurge for some Peanut Butter Cheerios this week. I sometimes go on cereal binges, eating nothing but cereal for about a week.

As you've probably figured out by now, I'm always amazed by Industry Statistics. For example the Cereal Industry is a $13 BILLION Dollar a year business!!!
That's larger than the GNP for a lot of Countries on this planet!!
    AMERICA!!! What a country!

Cereal is a major player if you use coupons. Some weeks are better than others but there are usually mfr. coupons for cereal in Sunday papers.

For some things, yes. Or a store brand. But most of the ones I like are simply not as good unless they're name brand, unfortunately. However, I do tend to stock up when they're on sale, and I pretty much always have coupons.  It's not so expensive when they're on sale 4 for $10 and you also have a $1.50 coupon for the "family size" boxes.

Supermarkets in this area also attach some special deals to sales like buy 4 and get a Catalina (register) coupon for a free gallon of milk or spend $20 in General Mills products in a single trip get a $3 or $5 coupon on a future purchase. So it pays.

    I'm confused.

I thought today was both "National Frozen Food Day" and "National Mexican Food Day".  I am going to "celebrate" by throwing a few of Sam's Club chimichangas into the oven.

I'm glad I had my Frosted Mini-Wheats for breakfast; otherwise they would be tonight's dessert.

It's no secret that the cereal packaging costs more than the cereal.  The same may be said of Coke.  But I buy the products of General Mills and Coca Cola voluntarily.  And they pay their own bills; they don't have my grandson in debt to the tune of $16T.

I am confused as well. Maybe because the other day was Absinthe day. Marone. Absinthe.
Surf & Turf day only happens on leap years?

March 5 was Absinthe Day as well as Cheese Doodle Day
March 6 was Frozen Food Day as well as White Chocolate Cheesecake Day
March 7 is Cereal Day as well as Crown Roast of Pork Day
I don't see a National Mexican Food Day.

Depends. Which country is celebrating "National Mexican Food Day"? Mexico or the USA??

I often buy generic brands, but I always look at the ingredients and the counts. There's one "generic" brand called "Hospitality" where the ingredients list is as good or better than the name brands.

I rarely buy cereal, even though I like it, because the boxes are so big.I am the only one eating it and it gets stale about half way through the box. This is true of some other products, too. I wish manufacturers would consider those of us with small families (and small storage spaces).
