Today's Restaurant: Ella's Kosher Deli & Ice Cream

Kosher Deli AND Ice Cream? This can only mean one of four things:

1. This "deli" serves no meat
2. The ice cream is non-dairy
3. They've changed the rules of Kashrut
4. It's not Kosher, but "kosher-style"

I had the same response to "Deli & Ice Cream." 10 years in NYC will do that to you. Immediately made me think of "military intelligence."

If you look closely at the pictures, the answer is "4." But it is an example of how far people will go with what they think is "real" deli.

I'm just guessing, but from the apparent advertising photo with the name it was probably the person who posted it who called it a Kosher deli. Personally, I don't use the word deli, preferring delicatessen -- a sort of contraction and Americanization of the Yiddish for delicacies to eat. But, hey, what do I know?

Yeah, I guess #4 as well. However, how can they call it "Kosher" right on the front there? Seems against kashrut labeling laws to do so.

As for Kashrut law, it's the same answer as how does Andre get away with selling Champagne. Kashrut law does not apply to a non-kosher establishment. If they were claiming to be kosher (i.e. under rabbinical supervision) and were not, then they might be in violation of state law.

Of course, it's in Wisconsin. Isn't there a law there requiring diary to be served with everything?

I did not see the kosher style foods in the pic. I only saw the place being called "Kosher". Thanks.

I did not see the picture but anyone who passed through UW-Madison in the seventies and eighties will remember this institution. There was one on State St., another on the east side with a bizarre carousel motif. Deli food was good by Wisconsin standards (mine were higher, having grown up with Canter's in So Cal). But the turtle fudge pound cake sundae was out of this world. I fear it is long gone.

The State Street store always had the better food. The east side store was more of a family restaurant catering to kids. Unfortunately, the better of the two stores closed.
