Today’s restaurant of the day; Chez Lenard. Wow. Not only do the hot dogs look delicious but the proprietor Chad Cohen is pretty easy on the eyes.

I can't comment on the looks of the proprietor because I got nauseous when I saw that hot dog with the "horseradish sauce". To put it delicately, it looked like something else to me.

I grew up in Ridgefield for at least 20 years, and to this day, a Chez Leonard is the best hot dog I've ever had. Chad wasn't the original proprietor of the cart. He and his wife took it over when the original gentleman, Mr. Mike Soetbeer, decided to retire. I interviewed him in sixth grade English class for a human interest project. Anyhow... For the last couple of years before I moved to Florida, I've seen Chad keep the tradition seamlessly. He's just as cool, nice, and funny as his picture may sggest :) I'll never forget, when I was home sick with mono for two months in seventh grade, I had no appetite, until my mom offered to bring home two Chez Leonards, with spicy mustard and onions. That was the pattern for the entire absense. Ahhh memories.

I know that the dogs served at Chez Lenard are Hebrew National with a collagen casing. I don't know if they are boiled or grilled. Anyone?

Thanks. I know that the great majority of hotdogs served in Connecticut are the beef/pork blend. But there are some great all beef dogs to be had as well. Chez Lenard, although I haven't been there yet, serves what I know to be a very good dog. Over 90% of Hebrew National dogs are skinless, yet Chad Cohen is able to get his with casing. I have to travel a good ways to get these dogs for myself. Another Connecticut hot dog joint serving a quality beef frank is Top Dog in Cos Cob. They use a natural casing Sabrett, which they grill. Definitely on my list for my next trip to Connecticut.

Actually, that is the photo from Roadfood. I just inserted it there, so others can see it without having to go back to see what everyone is talking about. Not sure what I like better in the photo.. Chef himself, or the dog.

Wayyyy to much onion on that poor doggie. You'll never taste the dog. Oh well, I rarely eat raw onions, I like 'em very well done. MikeS.

Red onions are very mild, hard to use too many. John
