Today's Special: Blasphemy!

"Having more people interested in good food is never a bad thing," said food writer Amanda Hesser,
who recently assembled "The Essential New York Times Cookbook." But what she can't stand, she said,
is eating dinner with people who "only want to talk about food and every place where they ate, like,
doughnuts or something, and where the best doughnuts are secretly found. Knowing a lot about food
culture is a good thing. That cataloguing of food experience is becoming tiresome. I'm pro-food experts.
I'm just not so sure I want to have dinner with them or have them judge me on the coffee I drink."

My Lord, how can anyone put down a hobby such as ours when it is harmless, boosts the economy, and brings people together for a common and much loved purpose?

It's possible she may be somewhat burned out in her job.  The things we love as hobbies turn out not to be so appealing as full-time jobs.  Just like that great, cool friend is fun to hang out with but you wouldn't necessarily want to share living quarters with him.  She may have started out loving it but has reached a saturation point as many of us do.  Just my 2 cents.

It's funny, but I'd really like to know the best place to get doughnuts around here!  The last independent doughnut shop in Miami-Dade county closed.  If a replacement opens up, I want to know about it.

I certainly don't share the views of the writer(s), mostly.  I guess the only painful thing is the food-obsessed who are ignorant about it.

A good counter to the "Foodie Fatigue" linked
story atop this thread -- including the line...

"I'm all for people knowing and appreciating where their food came from
and learning how to cook. It's when we start to look down on someone for
their love of a particular fast food chain (Wendy's spicy chicken, anyone?) or
other pedestrian interests and tastes that these so-called 'foodies' lose my
respect...if everyone loved only bacon and cupcakes and whatever else is 'in'
as much as food writers have touted, what a boring world we would live in"

...can be found online on the equally
    Chicago web publication, Gapers Block.

sounds like the utmost of snooty snobbery to me.
joerogo needs to send her a jar of Blackies relish.
and the rest of us email her all the Dominos & Pizza Hut coupons we can find.

I kind of liked the article, there was a lot of truth to it. Did she maybe go overboard a little, sure - but we are discussing it here so her mission is accomplished!

I also loved that link to the Barneys NY "have a foodie holiday" window display. Hilarious!
