Today's photo:Pepe's Pizzeria!!

Wow, to me that photo should be in the dictionary next to the word PIZZA! I can smell the wood smoke on that crust. There are so many ways to make pizza, and so many tast buds out there, but to this pizza-lover, give me that wood-fired oven pizza any day. What would have made that pizza better was bigger whole leaves of fresh basil generously placed on top!

    It looks good to me!

That Fairfield location is only about 30 miles from my brother's house, so it is definitely on my list of restaurants to visit some time in the future.

Yeah, a British citizen, born and raised in New York, where I remained for about 30 years, which means that out of very qualified judgement, and in my own personal opinion: about every one of the "pizzas" shown are crap.

LTB, you have to figure that for a lot of people, this is what they expect pizza to look like:

The word salty in the Pepe's picture caption turned me off right there. Thanks for the heads up on that one!

And Don, no, this is what we want:

wow, i personally think this sounds rather silly. you think the pizzas shown in the picture are crap based on the picture? have you ever eaten new haven style pizza (of which pepe's appizza, even in fairfield, is an excellent example)? i've grew up in both NYC and New Haven , and i can tell you, you'd be VERY hard pressed to find a pie in NYC that even comes close to that served at Pepe's (new haven OR fairfield locations). and yes, i've been going to difara for 15 years, long before he hit the cover of the voice, and yes i think UPN is a ripoff, and yes, i've eaten pizza in Napoli and all over italy MANY times and i can still safely say that calling a picture of a pepe's pizza, whatever it might be, "crap" is just plain silly. now if you've dined at Pepe's before and base your "opinions" (which personally sound a bit "trollish" to me) on a bad experience eating there, please do share this experience. but if you are purely basing your opinions on the picture... with all due respect- fb

Got to love some Jersey pizza. Was back home, in '05 and had one nice pie, from somewhere near Howell, NJ. It was so great. Beats anything out here in CA!

Just a nice simple pie, with sauce and muzz cheese...doesn't get much better than that...

As a New Haven native who had his first apizza at Frank Pepe's at the age of 4, all I can say is MAGNIFICENT! The plain pie -- the one with just tomato and grated cheese -- was always my favorite, but that might be because at 40 cents it was the only one I could afford as a kid. If you wanted mozzarella you had to pay 60 cents for an apizza. If you wanted mozzarella and sausage the cost was 80 cents. They didn't have pepperoni back then, thank God. Pepperoni was for sandwiches and salads, not appiza.

Holy cannoli, a totally positive Mr. Hoffman! Woo hoooooo!

FWIW, I actually think the photo does not remotely do justice to the wonderfulness that is Pepe's clam pizza.

Honestly, those photos of the pizzas are in no way good looking in a classical sense which just goes to show beauty may only be melted cheese deep. It is hard to comment about the taste of pizza by looks alone. After all Pizza Hut advertises beautiful looking perfectly arranged, proportioned and symmetrical pizzas.

I had my first Pepe's pizza at the location in Manchester on the CT Tour in April and I loved it! Chris, Amy and I split a white clam pie and a tomato pie (no mozzarella). Loved them both. I'm a fan of the "less is more" philosophy when it comes to pizza.

I have to echo FrankBooth's comments, hutt. If you've tried it and it's a personal preference, that's one thing. But if you've never had one, try it first and THEN decide if it's good or not. There is a lot of Roadfood that ended up liking after having been introduced to it by this site, And I never would have thought to eat out of my comfort zone (sometimes) if not for RF!!
