Today's poll results - "What's Your Favorite Soup For a Snowy Day?" Thu, 01/13/11 4:09 PM (permalink)
I'm a little surprised. I'm glad to see Split Pea Soup as the #1 Winter soup choice since that's the one I voted for but I thought for sure that Vegetable Soup would be #1. Vegetable is all the way down to #5!
What other soups not on that list should be ranked as a good Winter Soup?

I couldn't figure that one, either.  Actually, split pea would be the last thing to come to mind for me, so I was really surprised!  My choice would always be chicken noodle or something like that, with vegetable a close second.  Other than that, give me a good hearty stew or chili.

I could put a 7 Bean Soup on the list with some diced ham in it. I put ham in my Split Pea Soup too!

You're right, 7-bean soup with ham would be very good.  Hey, wait.   White bean & ham soup would be good.

Check my white Pasta E Fagiole recipe on a past thread. This Venetian soup is our choice for a cold day. A taste of Italy every time!!!!

Of the choices, I picked split pea but I'd have selected ham and bean soup as my #1 winter soup if it was an option.  Spouse would have wanted to pick potato soup.  The soup I made on the first snowy day this winter was ham hock and collard greens soup.  It took the chill right off.

I do not disagree with the poll and as a matter of fact, I am having split pea with Tennessee ham, smoked pork, a little hot sauce, onion, garlic and grill cheese sandwiches with a few glasses of wine(chablis) and a small amount of Thai hot pepper.

I absolutely love split pea soup, but havent been satisfied with the recipes I have tried.I will have a big old ham bone after this weekends Sunday dinner, and will probably make my 16 bean soup, as I usually do.On occasion, Bo got the bone...

I didn't vote in this poll because neither of my favorites was offered ~ as mentioned above, HamNBean is the one I've made several times so far this winter. But my top choice would be Beer-Cheese Soup. I have a wonderful recipe that really warms you up with an extra jolt of cayenne. It is addictive. Alas, my diet has prevented me from making it this year but to me it is the perfect soup for a wintry day...

I don't have a written recipe.  It's just a ham hock simmered in chicken broth to cover and then the hock removed to cool and be cut up.  Then I cooked about a cup of chopped onion and 1/2 cup each of chopped celery and carrots in the broth; steamed some chopped collard greens in the microwave and then dumped them in along with a little dried thyme,  black pepper, ground coriander and the ham cubes.  After it cooked down a bit, I added about a cup of evaporated milk.  I put a teaspoon of malt vinegar in it at the end.  You could thicken it if you want to but I like it brothy.

Whatever comes out of the can and doesn't have mushrooms works for me.

Where's the Beef? No beef based soups.
                              and french onion doesn't count.

A bowl of homemade beef vegetable soup and cornbread.  It's technically not a soup, but chili also. From a can - New England clam chowder, with some hot, buttered French bread is very filling.

Funny, I picked mushroom soup. A nice creamy bowl of mushroom soup just seemed so earthy, warming and cozy. I was pretty surprised it came in last!

Any soup is great. Where can you get more flavor than from a bowl of soup?
A soup that I like is Potato/Leek, but home made Beef/ Vegetable is comfort food on a cold snowy day.
Does anyone like a little pasta in their soup other than Chicken Noodle?

I find that pasta doesn't hold up well in homemade soups. If you make a small amount of soup and eat it that first time it does fine.  I use either a package of chicken wings or turkey drumsticks cooked in a crockpot, de-boned ,and the broth used for a turkey or chicken noodle soup, and I use medium-sized egg noodles.

But, in a large pot of vegetable soup, the noodles are ok in that first serving, but tend to overcook and get mushy if the soup is left to simmer, or if it's frozen, and re-heated.  One roadfooder posted a tip in a soup forum last year about cooking the noodles on the side and letting everyone add them to their soup.

I'll stick with my choice of a steaming bowl of hearty, New England clam chowda. Hopefully, loaded with lots of belly's.

A bowl of homemade beef vegetable soup and cornbread.  It's technically not a soup, but chili also. From a can - New England clam chowder, with some hot, buttered French bread is very filling.

Yes!  Has to be homemade vegetable beef in 1st, chili (non-soup division) and my third would be beef stew with huge, fluffy cornmeal & cheese enhanced dumplings.

WHOA, or what I'm making for dinner right now (late!) - chicken & andouille gumbo with rice.  Gumbo is a soup, yes?  How'd it get left off this list??

none of those were on the list, but chili, beef stew, and gumbo aren't soups.
If the entry had been vegetable beef I would have voted it in, but vegetarian vegetable is a cruel joke.

I didn't see Beef Barley on the list. I pick Beef Barley. But thats my favorite hands down soup for any day of the year.

Picky, picky, if it has to be eaten with a spoon, I'd put it in a soup category.

Ann - I'm baking a ham this afternoon, and and in a day or so, will try out a new split pea soup recipe from a recent Cook's magazine,.  It calls for a ham steak, so cut yourself off a slab of your ham and reserve - cause I'm sure it will be good and I'll post soon.  Oh, another thing, it's the law- split pea has to have ham, right?

I voted for Clam Chowder although I haven't eaten it in years due to it's sodium content.

I like my creamy potato soup. It wasn't on the list.

PS for pasta in soup you have to keep it in 2 separate containers. If you don't the pasta sucks up additional liquid & gets too mushy, even for me & I like the mush. Put the cooked noodles on the bottom of the bowl. DO NOT bother heating them up, you will change their texture for the worse. Heat up the soup. Pour hot soup over noodles. DONE!
