Great story about Sammy Baugh------I went to Ebbets Field to see the Skins play the Brooklyn Dodger (they had a NFL team in 39 or 40) ----- I had 50 cents with me which was all I needed to get into a baseball game---25 cent bleacher seat and 25 cents for hotdog and coke. But football was more expensive and there were no seats for half-a-buck. I waited until the game started and then looked for a scalper who was stuck with tickets----I offered him my saved up 1/2 dollar and got a ducat. (I was street smart at 12 or 13). By the way I had traveled about 25 miles on trains to get there, all by myself. How about that ! Low and behold my seat was in a box on the 50 yard line----and sitting next to me, in the next box, were Dan Topping the Dodgers owner and his wife Sonja Henie the Olympic Skating Champ and Movie Star. What a deal !!!!!!!!! Best seat in the house. If I am not mistaken (if I am it will be the first time) The Dogers and Ace Parker beat Slinging Sammy. By the way ---the Washington Marching Band was there playing "Hail to the Redskins" everytime they made a first down. The Skins were owned by a guy named Marshall who was also married to a movie actress ---so there were movie stars on both sides. Ben--now you know the rest of the story. And you have piqued my interest---I shall have to google that game and see who won. Put the info in the back of my brain so I can remember the outcome the next time someone asks about the best all-around football player of all time-----in my opinion,, of course.

the ancient mariner Brother Score Reader---now I know what you are up to ---I thought you were a guy who read the musical score and led the 76 trombones down Pennsylvania Ave. But now I realize it is football scores you are reading, analyzing and figgering out how to make big bucks with. -----------Ferrrrrry H'interesting!!!!!! Now, I know Marching Band is a competitive and artistic endeavor, completely separate from athletic games - but, if you do marching band, for as long as I've done marching band, you've seen a few football games.

Since we have 2 experts. may I ask Which college has the best marching band--- I love OSU doting the "i" and Michigans Marching Song And the USC Trojans and their big white horse----but I hate all 3 teams. It is a tragedy of modern TV broadcasting that at half time we must listen to former jocks, and would be jocks making jokes of themselves. In the good old days 1/2 time consisted of the two bands marching and tooting in all their glory---it was much more entertaining----and I'll bet a lot cheaper---a few more feet of film instead of paying 3 or 4 glooms with dumb analysis. Give me that big gigantic drum and the Grambling Strutters, and Let's hear it for the Little Leprechaun in his suit of GREEN.

Holy Shnitski's...Ancient you really are pretty old. Hope you live another 50 years. Good story. Thanks! And I was only kidding...Amazing! Hey, didn't Dan Topping also once own part of the Yankees? I never knew they played football at Ebbets Field. I was at Ebbets Field and saw the Dodgers and Braves. They actually had a brawl that afternoon game..Eddie Mathews (3b), Johnny Logan (s/s), the centerfielder was Billy Burton ( thin left hand hitter), Del Crandall (c)..Duke Snyder (cf) played in the game, Gil Hodges, etc. I also went to the Polo Grounds, but I was too young to appreciate it.

The only important thing this season is the Minnesota Golden Gophers move into their new open air traditional horseshoe shaped stadium back on campus after playing in the Metrodome since 1982. The shoe opens onto a view of the downtown Minneapolis skyline.

Davydd: definately a plus for the Gophers' program - and the campus buzz when school starts should be pretty exciting. I saw a "making of" the new stadium program on Big Ten Network. Was very cool. speaking of which - today's main college football page at espn has a big pic of the new stadium at Minn: http://espn.go.com/college-football/

Is Minny Sota still in the league ???? Haven't heard from them in a loooooooong time. A kid brother of a teen buddy was starting QB for the Gophers in the 50's and was drafted by Baltimore Colts. Jim Reese. Ben----Holy Snitsky to you also----Saban was just voted #2 College Coach by Sports Illustrated behind Meyers ---#3 was Pistol Pete Carroll # 4 Stoops to conquer and then Kelly from Cinn. where the chocolate chili grows-----Charlie Weis was not seen or heard from--and neither was Joe Pa----uup pa !!!!! After this year Weis will be in the mix. I had a try out in the Polo Grounds-------center field was about a mile deep. Saw Jimmy Pearsall hit his 100th homer at the PG and then he ran the bases backward. Got cut from the '62 Mets the next day. Stengall said one clown on a team is enough and that's was himself. Topping did own the Yankees with a guy named Del Webb if I am not mistaken. Best baseball fight I ever saw -----lefty pitcher of the Pirates hit someone with a fastball inside------next batter Junior Gilliam laid down a perfect bunt making the pitcher field it near the 1st base line-----Gilliam never ran toward 1st at all but right at the pitcher who was bent over to field the ball---caught him right in the jaw with his knee--------what a fight---300 Spartans in a big pile on the infield. Play Ball- May the better man win , now go back to your corners and come out fighting. And win one for the Gipper.

Score Reader - really? Do you have facts to back up that statement ???? Actually I would take your word if you are serious. Never remember seeing or hearing them. Does Joe Pa coach them also ? How are they doing for woodwind recruits this year? Check out a kid named Dakota Royer on Youtube--2010 LB recruit Jumps out of a pool onto the surround at the 4-0 depth--- no hands of course, that would be cheating. Looks like it is between PSU and ND for his services----but Joe probably will win because Royer is interested in agriculture, and ND has no cow milkin' classes.

Tebow was not an unanimous selection for Conference Pre-Season All-American -----they suspect the evil hand of Lane Kiffin at work here. He seems to be a curious duck does Bro. Kiffin----I wonder how he will work out as a head coach.

It is going to be interesting to see how the Bucs D does without his father. I thought Fulmer should have been let go long ago. I think the players will like Lane Kiffin. I'd like to see the Vols give the Gators a run for their money going forward. Not to change the subject, but do you see what's been happening to Billy Donovan...I think his initial plan to coach the Magic was the correct one! Sorry to digress. Back to football!! So does anyone think the QB from Ole Miss can outdo Tebow this year? If not, do you think he will at least be the second best in the conference?

Florida opens at #1 in the Coaches poll, which usually doesn't work out all that well.

I will not comment---words alone can not express my thoughts ---well maybe one or two hear and there------Mystery Team vs. Akron--------------------win by 45 Syracuse----------------win by 28 Temple-------------------win by 30 Iowa----------------------win by 14 Illinois---------------------win by 21 E.Illinois-------------------win by 35 Minn------------------------win by 21 Mich-------------------------win by 14 N'western------------------win by 28 Ohio St----------------------lose by 7 Indiana---------------------win by 21 Mich St----------------------win by 7 Joe Pa and the lads from Penn St do it again ---another Bowl with the easiest schedule in major College Football. Joe Rogo you should be ashamed. Only 4 games out of 12 where the uniforms get dirty and the guys have to raise a sweat. Notre Dame has an easy schedule too, but not like these push overs.

Ok smarty pants. You have PSU at 11 and 1, I believe it will be 10 and 2(Haven't picked the second loss yet). Please tell us how The Irish finish their year with their equally soft schedule. Hawaii? Remember JoePa said he will play Notre Dame in any preseason, regular season or post season game. He reminds me of the wrestling manager Classy Freddie Blassie, "McMann, We will fight that pencil neck geek anytime, anyplace" Those Brooklyn Boys are tough. Almost as tough as the Girls from Westbury BTW, Did I ever tell you that I met Rudy? He's half Sea-Chili-On-O ya know.

Are you calling Charlie Weis a pencilled-neck-geek---smoley hoke Joe you gotta take another look. My favorite was Antonio Rocca-------he could drop kick you right out of the ring. Mamma mia. So Rudy is 1/2 Sicilian and 1/2 Irish-----not bad. You can get used to Meat balls and cabbage. Faust and Rudy should have converted you by now. Westbury---wow you are in my back yard---My shop was in Glen Cove. But honestly Joe those babes in Westbury ain't nuttin compared to Great Neck and 5 towns. Westbury is training camp for the other 2. I think ND goes 10-2----comparing the schedule with PSU we both play Mich and MSU. You lose to OSU we lose to USC-----youse guys have 3 real pussy cats--- Akron, Temple, and E.Illinois where ND at the same time has Navy, Stanford and the ferocious Pittsburg Panthers (is Marshall Goldberg still playing). So ND has a tougher road to hoe---- Hoe, hoe, hoe. Where-ja go Joe DiMaggio Hoe, hoe, hoe ? One month to kick-off -----love it !!!!!! Uncle Zeo the 1st

If we are talking walks in the park, let's not forget Nevada and Connecticut. Ok, Now maybe you want to sit down for this. Rudy's other half is German. Not an ounce of Irish in him. They played him as an Irish Lad in the film, but it ain't so. His father is German and his mother is Italian. Rudy, The aubun haired lad in the movie. Rudy, The dark haired Hi-Tal-E-On-O in real life. JoePa is still packing them in on defense http://www.timesleader.com/sports/Manheim_Jr__Royer_verbally_commits_07-31-2009.html?searchterm=royer

Let me splane you how I did this Joe I took all 12 games for both teams We both play Mich and MSU--You lose to Ohio St and we lose to USC So we are left with 9---hokay ! Which is the tougher schedule ? PSU----------Notre Dame Akron--------Nevada ----------even up Syracuse----Navy---------------Navy tougher Temple -----Stanford-----------Stanford " Iowa---------Pitt -----------even Stephen Illinois-------Boston College---BC easy E. Illinois----Conn ------------Conn in a walk Minn----------Wash--------------even N'western---Purdue------------even Indiana------Wash St----------Wash St So, U C it was easy ND has the tougher guys to play. kabisch (Good with corned beef) Royer is good I liked him---ND came in 2nd for him, but leaners don't count in this game. We just didn't have any cow milking courses. Sleep tight

Well this takes the cake-------just because I am getting a certain amount of heat from persons who shall be nameless I looked it up--------I went to the experts, the guys who know everything before the season starts------- Under Strength of Schedule I find my beloved Notre Dame at 36th. I was about to close down the computer and concede defeat when I noticed Florida was 34th--------we have as tough a schedule as the National Champs----WOW. I am feeling better----so I look a little further----Ohio St, the other chief contender for National Honors-----39th----how can this be---I have heard nothing about them having an easier schedule than the Irish-------but Joe Rogo---I didn't see PSU in the mix-------PSU where are you ??? Joe-----Joe ------ your beloved Nittany Lions under the exaulted JoePa has the 72nd toughest schedule. They just beat out Appalachia State Teacher's College (guys that still have leather helmets and a girl from the soccer team as kicker). USC is #17 and plain old SC (South Carolina) has the #1 toughest road to hoe. Let's Go Irish !!!!!!!
