Toojays Deli Sat, 05/17/08 10:51 PM (permalink)
Having been born & spent most of my life in the NYC area, I guess I took good deli (Jewish, Italian, German, etc) for granted.

A couple of years ago, we moved to Melbourne, FL, which is on the Central East Coast of the state. Finding good deli in this area is harder to find than a day in the mid 40's. A Toojays Deli (http://www.toojays.com/ ) is about to open in the area...should I be excited or is it a case of don't get my hopes up? Anybody familiar with this operation?

Too Jays is better than an average diner, but nowere as good as a real independant deli. They've expanded so much, that the place just feels "corporate". Pretty good blintzs, though. I eat there whenever I'm in Boca, simply because it's way better than the breakfast at my hotel, and it's only a few blocks away.

      Pigiron,

I need a fix of good pastrami or corned beef on a rye that has some crunch to it's crust & a full-sour pickle...can I at least get close at Toojays? I'm living in an area that thinks a knish is a misspelling!

Everyone was excited when TooJays came to Vero Beach back in the early 90's. I had eaten at the one in West Palm Beach a couple of times and was also looking forward to it. I don't think anyone was disappointed and, as far as I know, it's still very popular today. It may not be equal to the great deli's of NYC, but is way better than what went before. jmho, pb

Like I said, it's going to be better than what you can get in a standard restaurant, but it's not going to be memorable. However, It WILL be fresh, because these restaurants are super popular and always busy.

I've liked the food there but I find the seating uncomfortably close. You will hear your neighbors conversations as though they were your own. I think that's similar to a lot of NY deli's however.

Corporate seems to be the key word..
I have checked out toojays menu online, and seems that they are trying to get the grandkids (of the folks that are used to "REAL" Jewish Deli's,) to try them out...subtley, which, in Fla, are becoming dinosaurs..

I too am a born and bred New York City guy. There are no
delis or bagels or pizza anywhere else in the world that can
compare. But-----Toojay's is the best in Florida. You take
what you can get---it's a lot easier and cheaper than going
back to "The City" for one sandwich. Or even two.

When in Rome do as the Roman's do. But what kinda pastrami do
they have in Rome ?? What do they know ??? Go to TooJays
                "You'll Like It".

I have never had a bad meal at TooJays and had plenty at "authenic" real independent delis. I'll take Toojays everyday and twice on Sunday, thank you! Definitely the best in South FL

Once I get back to Fla, I am definitely going to check them out.
Their menu reminds me of comfort food....

In St Pete, Fla. we prefer Lucky Dill - the place has a bit of NY attitude softened by southern graciousness, and the pastrami and the corned beef are fine.

                      Cheers, John
