Toscanini's Ice Cream gone? Fri, 01/18/08 2:05 PM (permalink)
The local papers are reporting that Toscanini's ice cream in Cambridge has been seized by the state for non-payment of a variety of taxes. According to The Globe, Toscanini's was once called the best ice cream in the world by the New York Times.

I haven't had it in about ten years, but it was some of the best ice cream available in a town that's pretty serious about ice cream.

Can anyone comment/compare on the ice cream from another member of the Rancatore family? The Globe says there's a shop in Belmont.

I am shocked! Not only is it some of the best ice cream in New England, but with the prices they charged they should have no problem paying those taxes.

I have never been to Toscanini's, but I ate at Rancatore's in Lexington on Sunday and thought the ice cream was very, very good. The real expert on this subject matter would definitely be Ceci, though.

I am sorry to hear about the closing!

      Stephen-
Can you answer something for me? After the fried clam/roast beef sandwich Roadfood tour in 2006, you had some ice cream for us. Was it from Christina's or Toscanini's? We were discussing this last weekend.

As good - even great - as Toscanini's Ice Cream is (was?!?!) some people are good bsuiness people and some just are not.

Gus is a very nice man and a great ice cream maker... but he just wasn't a good businessman. Sometimes that happens.

I'm sad for him... and anyone who misses it can head out to Belmont or Lexington for Rancatore's Ice Cream - which IMHO is actually better. But I *am* biased!

Say it ain't so, Joe!!! I loved that place and adored their Grape Nut ice cream. I was hoping to review them on my next trip to Boston. Sadly, all things must come to an end.

Is this insider knowledge or just random coincidence??!!
Gus's brother is Joe (Rancatore) and you can still get Grape Nut ice cream (though Joe's is Grape Nut Raisin) at the Belmont & Lexington locations I mentioned & took Buffetbuster to..... see his pic on the Durgin Park thread.

The ice cream at the end of the New England Eating tour was from Christina's.

There is one in Harvard Square, yes. Or was perhaps? I haven't looked for it in a long time.

FYI rumor has it that Gus is negotiating with the state and might be able to re-open next week. Note I said MIGHT.

                      Hey ceci,

Just a random coincidence. I've been using the Shoeless Joe reference a lot lately for some reason.

Oh shucks... would've been more fun if you had said you were psychic!
