Tostones recipe Wed, 07/13/05 1:15 PM (permalink)
3 green plantains
oil for frying
garlic powder
salt to taste

Slice the peeled plantains diagonally into 1" slices. Fry the slices over medium heat until they soften. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. You can use a tostonera but not many people have one so you can do as I do and just use a brown paper sack (where the fold is at the bottom place the slice flat side down and fold flap over from sack applying pressure on your palm to flatten or a plate for added pressure).

After pressing all the pieces you then want to dip each piece in warm salted garlic powder water and then fry again until crispy or a light golden brown.

Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels. Add salt to taste. You can serve the tostones with ketchup (which is our favorite) or garlic sauce.

NOTE: Tostones are best when hot! They are not sweet like a banana and actually after being cooked taste more like a french fry!

Enjoy!
