I will be flying into Quebec and traveling to Gaspe, New Brunswick, PEI and on to Novia Scotia on a birding trip. I pretty well got the trip planned out and I sure would appreciate local knowledge. Looking forward to good food.

Looking forward to lobster suppers, local flare and good stuff.

We were in that area a couple of years ago. Try to find little Acadian restaurants that specialize in meat pies. they are better than they sound. I don't recommend the donairs. they are a snack food like we might eat a hotdog, only a donair has lebanese bologna covered in lettuce and tomatoes, and I think cheese, but then they go and ruin it by putting this cold, white creamy, SWEET, sauce all over it. YUUUch. PEI is sooooo beautiful. have a great trip. feel free to email me with more questions. we spent a good 3 weeks in eastern canada.

Look for just about any church offering a lunch or dinner of fish stew or soup. Not only is the price right, but we never had anything but excellent food at whatever church we happened to stumble upon.
During several visits to Nova Scotia over the years wehave learned to look for church suppers.

        Dear Mr Smith:
I hope you have not left for your trip yet as I lived in the maritimes for a few years and I have a few remomendations. In Quebec you have to find a none chain hamberger joint and have POUTINE. It is french fries covered with spicie gravey and white cheese curds. (the big kind like in Wisconsin not like cottage cheese) It is the road food speaciality of the region. Also Tortiere, which is a Quebec style meet pie. Growing up my franaphone friends would smother theirs with ketchup. One great thing about the Maritimes is that corperate chain type resturaunts are not all that popular, so your choice of independent cafes are very high. Like most every where it is hit and miss. A Donair is a franaphone term for GYROS. Same thing except that the sause refered to is call Tsadzeekie (SP?) made with yogurt, cucumbers, garlic and sweet onion. If you are going to Fredreickton New Brunswich or Halifax Nova Scotia and you want to try Donair I would recommend the "King of Donair" 621 King st. Fredreickton 455-3333. They have them in Halifax too. They have this area in Halifax called "Pizza Corner" with 4-5 Pizza/Donair joints to choose from. King of Donair is there but my favorite is Sisiclian (SP?). Like in Maine you can find a really great lobster roll at just about any roadside stand. One of the places that I would not miss would be the farmers market in Saint John New Brunswich. It is an indoor market (it's Canada it gets cold) in a fabulous building made by ship builders. You can tell that by looking up at the ceiling and it looks like the inside of an old wooden ship. They have home made type fair as well as fabulous fishmongers and fruit and veggie stands. One such stand is run by the famous Pete Lucket (food network's food traveler) called Pete's Frootique. You should not leave the market with out trying an area delacasy called DULCE. It is a type of seeweed eaten in the region out of bags like people elsewhere eat potato chips. The out side of the market is rimmed with all kinds of choices of food stand and places that will travel pack lobster for you. You can get lobster rolls, donair, steamed mucles, homemade jams and baked goods, and any type of maple sugar product, its a real Canuck treasure. There is a clam stand on the hyway just outside of Saint John that is a roadfood must but I will have to get back to you on it's name. Bon Voyage I hope I didn't rattle on too much.

Lovie: Thanks for your advice and local knowledge. I have not made my trip yet, but expect to soon. I delayed it for several reasons: war, SARS ,etc.

          Thanks
