Travellnig with Pets (Especially Cats!) Thu, 10/21/10 11:07 AM (permalink)
Does anyone know of a website that helps people travelling with pets find pet-friendly accomodations?

We have a new kitty we don't want to leave or board so we want to find B&Bs, inns and hotels that take cats. And often, even if a place says pets are allowed, many of them mean dogs only. So are there any, if any hotels or hotel chains that are cat-friendly?

Thanks for any help or info on this.

Most cities have plenty of Cathouses!

AAA publishes a book of Pet-Friendly accomodations across North America. Available at most Triple A offices. It is set up much like their regional tour books.  You can also search the AAA web-site for motels that allow pets. We use these resources a lot as we generally take our two Scotties with us when we roadtrip.

Always check with the motel...not a reservation service, when the 'extra fee for pets' info is listed on the motel site. Pet Fees can range from a simple Five dollars to an outrageous $100 NON-Refundable fee (per pet) for a room that we reserved for $55 for two humans !  ALWAYS confirm the actual cost!

We do keep a fold-down wire kennel-cage in the back of the truck to use should the need arise. but in 7 years that has only happened once.

I couldn't imagine traveling with cats, at least not with the two we had that were never conditioned to traveling or leaving the apt. as kittens. Both would freak out in the car and needed to be sedated and kept in the kitty carrier just to go to the vet. When we had the place fumigatied, I took them to my ex-MIL's house and they liked to drove her crazy trying to bolt through any door she opened. Totally disoriented outside of their usual surroundings.

            Dawn,
we moved with a cat one time....never again. The pet reacted exactly as you describe in your post.

Now my Scotties have learned to listen to the voice on my GPS, so they know when we are leaving one road for another...and that may mean a food-stop or something to sniff ! One of my earlier pets reacted to the sound of the turn indicator clicking...and raised their alert level accordingly !  Our dogs are very good travelers.

When we moved to the Virgin Islands we had to tranquilize our cat -- coincidentally named Miltown -- for the flights from New York to San Juan and San Juan to St. Thomas. The tranquilizer wore off shortly after takeoff from San Juan, and I had to hold the straw travel case closed all the way. Thank goodness it was a short flight.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: Most New York pet owners are familiar with Warren Eckstein, who has a weekly radio show, THE PET SHOW. He's an animal behaviorist. He wrote a book called "How to Get Your Cat to Do What You Want", which is not about teaching it tricks as much as it is preventing the problems; stay on command, come on command, riding in a car, even leash walking. One of the goals of the book is to get the cat well enough trained that you could travel with it.

We use PetVacations.com for super discounts on all pet friendly hotels.  At Motel 6, pets are always free.

He is great. Saturday afternoon at 4 pm. I can get the book  and see if I can train a cat to call Arthur Frommer (Travel Show) to see where the cat wants to go on vacation.  Maybe I should get a cat....first.

This is a hoot. This guy must have never owned or lived with a cat. Cats get you to do what they want on their terms, not visa versa. Our two were the most wonderfully behaved companions you could dream for and very low maintainance. The few times in their lives they needed to be transported or moved to another location is a moot point . Chances are if you're a cat person and really understand a cat, you don't need professional advise. Training is for dogs.

DawnT is right.  People train dogs, but cats train people.

Las Vegas is out. It would have been nice to go to the Pawn Stars with Mr. Cat.

We travel with our cat in our RV, but right now we are on the road in our car so we left our cat at Just Cats. She has her own private four level kitty condo for the holidays.

My one suggestion for traveling with your cat-
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GO THROUGH THE CARWASH WITH YOUR CAT IN THE CAR!!!!!
Many years ago, we(me(6 months pregnant with our 4th), darling husband, 3 kids-8, 4, & 8 months), when were traveling from Indy to West Virginia for Christmas.  We had a little Toyota Corrola station wagon, packed to the gills.  Also, our little kitty, Charkie.  On our way our of town, we stopped & drove through the local carwash.  Oh, my goodness, Charkie went bonkers!!!  Scrambling over the kids, presents, my pregnant tummy & under my hubby's seat.  No I don't know if you remember those little Toyota Corrola wagons, but there was no room under those seats, but Charkie found a place.  We both felt so bad, but I guess packing all our gear,3 kids, me pregnant, addled our brains, but we never thought about how that little kitty would react.  She stayed under the seat for all 7 hours of the trip.   took about 6 hours after we arrived in WV to coax her out.  Poor kitty!!!
