Treet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search

This article does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unverifiable material may be challenged and removed. (September 2007) Treet is a canned meat product, similar to SPAM, that is marketed under the brand name Armour Star by the Pinnacle Foods in the USA [1]. Treet is made with chicken and pork. SPAM is made with pork. Treet is often less expensive than SPAM.[citation needed]
Treet has a less greasy texture than SPAM, more akin to bologna or vienna sausages. Like SPAM, it is often heated before consumption. This includes frying or baking. Baked Treet with ketchup or steak sauce is often referred to as "Treet loaf" after meat loaf. Although it is officially a "spiced luncheon loaf", Treet is often called "Treet meat". For unknown reasons, possibly ingredient costs, Treet is copied for private label luncheon loaf more often than SPAM. While very popular, Treet does not have SPAM's cult following.

I happen to prefer Treet to Spam. I started buying it some 40 years ago when it was half as expensive as Spam. Now, while I sometimes buy Spam, it's usually Treet that goes into my shopping bag, even though there's nowhere near the same difference in price.

I cannot tell the difference between the two products but I guess that when one uses these products (like I do) one has no taste!

My mother used to chop it up and add sweet relish and Hellman's mayonaise and call it ham salad................we loved it.

I suppose it would just be easier to buy a can and find out myself but is Treet as salty as Spam?

Treet is salty, of course, but perhaps not quite as salty as Spam. To me, Treet is a lot like Taylor Pork Roll.

Here is an interesting article about Taylor Pork Roll - we can get it here in greater Cinci only at Jungle Jim's - either packaged as shown or sliced at the deli counter:

I helped out with a food bank right after Desert Storm.  We got tons of surplus stuff from Uncle.  There were p&d jumbo shrimp, breaded veal patties nad 6oz ribeyes.  We also got the commodity stuff Govt cheese and tinned pork.  The pork came in a long square can like a pullman ham.  It was like a combo of sousse and treat.  Realy oily and gelatiny.  We used to hand out sandwiches in the soup kitccken.  If it wasnt kept cold, the fat holding the meat together would melt, leaving soggy breat with meat hunks.

I prefer Spam to Treet. We had this conversation a couple years ago and In retried Treet then.

Actually I buy WMs GV lunchen loaf, taste the same as Spam to me and about a dollar cheaper. I keep about a case on hand as part of my emergency preps.

I like Spam better too.  Only tried Treet once a few years ago, and thought it was real salty.  But others here differ, so who knows?  I don't mind Spam Lite so much, though.  I'm hoping it won't kill me quite as fast.

I will have to check with our local Kroger in Mt Orab - as far as I am aware they never have stocked it anywhere...

Tell you what. Go to the deli counter at the Kroger store in the Stoneridge Plaza on North Hamilton Road at Morse Road in Gahanna and you'll find the Taylor Pork Roll in the same case as the Boar's Head hot dogs, knockwurst and pepperoni.

Treet actually has a few different versions.  A lot of stores including Family Dollar & Dollar General sell the"Baked Virginia Ham Taste" Treet (actually a blend of mechanically seperated chicken & pork) at  $1.00 for a 12 oz. can.  There is also a "Premium Pork" version of Treet  that our local Sav-A-Lot stores sell for about $1.40 for a 12 oz can. If you compare the "Premium Pork" Treet to regular Spam the nutritional content is pretty much the same but the Treet works out to be half the price.  Fried up or grilled I find it hard to taste a difference between them.  Both Treet Lite and Spam Lite contain chicken.

If your a connissure of canned meat products don't pass up trying "Turkey Spam".  It actually has a totally different flavor and is considerably lower in fat content than regular Treet or Spam.
