Tribute Band Names

Tribute Bands can range anywhere from amusing & entertaining to pretentious & boring. I think a lot of that comes from how seriously the band being paid tribute to took their music & themselves. In some cases, the best part of the act was the name of the band. I just saw that a Tom Petty tribute band was playing at Disney World. They billed themselves as “Petty Theft”. My favorite (& nominee for most succinct) was a ZZ Top tribute; they called themselves “ZZ Not”. Got any favorites? Feel free to make up your own!

We get a lot of them through here. Badfish - tribute to Sublime Dark Star Orchestra - Tribute to the Grateful Dead Johnny Cash the Check (self-explanatory, no?) Shoot, now I'm drawing a blank on any more. I may be back.

Does the name indicate the size of the band or is it a reference to a point in Elvis' career? Well, Mike himself is a BIG guy, with a shaved head, and not making any attempt to look like Elvis. And the ensemble is indeed big - horn section, guitars and drums, backup singers, go-go dancers, naturally falling into Vegas-era Elvisness. So, I'd say, combination of all that!

Back in the day there was a reggae style Led Zeppelin tribute band that had an Elvis impersonator for the lead singer... Dread Zeppelin. Don't know if they're still around.

No, but you apparently missed the Beach Boys recording Chuck's "Sweet Little Sixteen" with new lyrics and calling it "Surfin' USA" and crediting the song to Brian Wilson, Chuck suing them for for plagerism and winning, and the judge ordering the Beach Boys to correct their all future records to show Chuck Berry & Brian Wilson as co-writers of "Surfin' USA".

So one song out of hundreds makes them a tribute band? Interesting. I'll have to pass that on to the folks I know in the industry.

Old "industry" joke: Q: Name an early Beach Boys song that copies a Chuck Berry Song A: Name one that doesn't OK, Ok - you got me, Mr. Humourless..."Sail On Sailor" doesn't.

Are you calling me Mr. Humourless? Also interesting, as I am female. Having spent the majority of the last 20 years working in the entertainment industry, I can assure you that simply playing music written or previously performed by another does not make anyone a tribute band. Or even a cover band. It makes them a band. You might as well call David Allen Coe a tribute band for Steve Goodman.

Oh hell---EVERY one that ever wrote a tune stole something from someone---and even if they were sued and lost--it doesnt mean they KNEW they stole it---Heck John Fogety was sued by the company that own his early Credence material because a newer tune--yrs later-sounded like one he wrote in the old days---and everyone in the industry knows ALL his stuff spounds like that--thats what makes him John Fogety. So does that make Fogety a Creadence Tribute band? Jeez--the Beach Boys had a gazillion hits and "Stole" one---big woop--i was not a huge fan of theirs like i said--but Brian Wilson was a rock and roll genius who had PLENTY of folks steal from him too. And i have met Chuck--and he thinks EVERYONE stole his material!

Oh please. If I had something in a wad, you'd be the first to know. You're just entirely too stuck on this whole Beach Boys/Chuck Berry thing for your own good. This is a thread about tribute bands, but instead you're using it to rant and rave over a 40-some-year old, long-settled legal battle. It must be an OLD industry joke, as I'd never heard it before. Like I said, I've only been around 20 years or so...and the Beach Boys/Chuck Berry thing happened in, what...1963?

Looking through YouTube, I just spotted a Shaggs tribute band named My Band Foot Foot. I have officially seen everything now. For the blissfully ignorant, the Shaggs (ca. 1969) were three sisters put into the recording studio by their father before they learned to play (and possibly hold) their instruments; 'My Pal Foot Foot' being the relative high point of their album.

I looked up My Band Foot Foot; they are much more than a tribute band. They are J.C. Sanford, John McNeil, Andrew Green, and a few other avant-garde jazz guys! "Rather than attempt to imitate the Shaggs, My Band Foot Foot has drawn on their original tunes as inspiration and arranged them in a wide variety of musical genres, including jazz, blues, musical theatre, chamber music, rock, gospel, and more." They are pretty damn good.

All I saw was a video of them doing a high-octane cover of "It's Halloween" that did show some good musical chops - and using the Shaggs as a point of reference is always okay in my book!
