Tried my first Maid-Rite

We stopped in Lamoni, IA on wednesday on our way to Des Moines and I tried my first Maid-Rite.
 
I was underwhelmed. My reaction was "Meh". It was bland and boring. I cannot see what the big deal is. We're getting one here in Topeka soon, and I'm in no hurry to go back.

    I have been curious about Loose meat sandwiches.  Was it anything like a sloppy joe?

    A Maid-Rite is nothing more or less than somewhat moist and mildly seasoned not-pressed-into-a-hamburger-patty simmered ground beef.  (Yes, I do like them, especially as cheese-rites with a slice of American cheese on them.)  I do not know the "secret ingredients" in their cooking liquid, but you can try a similar one at home by cooking ground beef in a mixture of about 1 part Worchestershire sauce to 8 parts beef broth to 16 parts of water, stirring constantly to break the meat up as it cooks. If you wish, you may add finely minced onions to your cooking liquid. (Some people say chicken broth is used instead of beef broth, and others say Coke or Pepsi are used instead of water.  From watching the cooks make them, the "secret" liquid that they add from a gallon jug to keep the meat moist during the day is dark brown in color.)  When the meat is done, but not dry, transfer the meat with a slotted spoon to a hamburger bun, top with your favorite toppings, and enjoy.

    To me they are boring, just a sloppy joe without the sauce.  But my wife loves 'em.  I can eat a couple, then leave them alone for a year, but she has a craving.

    The traditional serving is mustard (regular old yellow), chopped pickle and chopped onion.  It's a nice mild little snack.

    I love a homemade sloppy joe of loosemeat, but never really found one from a MaidRite or cafe that I cared for.

    I love the loosemeat sandwiches at Maid-Rite. Unfortunately, the nearest location to my place is over two hours away.

    can't say I'm a big fan, tasteless ground beef to me too.

    I've tried several times and just can't figure out what the appeal is, I agree cheese one's taste better, but that's not saying much.

    I had my first Maid Rite Sandwich yesterday but it was not from a Maid Rite outlet. It was made at an Independent Restaurant in Phoenix AZ, The Phoenix City Grille. Apparently the owner or the Chef is familiar with what a Maid Rite Sandwich is:

    It's not a regular menu item yet but they put it on the chalkboard as a Daily Lunch Special several days a week. They're thinking about putting it on the Menu due to customer response. Never having had one before, I had no point of reference other than what I've read described on Roadfood threads.
     
    I thought their version was TERRIFIC! Good quality beef, good onion flavor and held together with a good quality cheese. did I mention Quality?
     
    Served with a fantastic, delicious bun from a local Bakery, Simply Bread. http://www.simplybread.com/
    The only way I can describe it is that it was a cross between an an English Muffin and a Ciabatta roll, buttered & lightly grilled. The Chef from Simply Bread lead a team that won the World-wide Bread Making Olympics, They beat all the European Teams!
     
    If you're a Snowbird from the Midwest or a local, I suggest you check it out! I think it's usually on the Chalkboard for Saturday Lunch & one other day

    My Wife is from Northern Iowa and told me that they were a regular comfort food that people made at home during the late 50's early 60's. 

    I have tried them and I can take or leave them.  Give me an Iowa Tenderloin sandwhich  instead.
