Jan may be able to join us, but won't know until right before. Doesn't matter: I have a double room. And if she can't come, there are. . . . ah, other possibilities. Just assume that if I have a female in attendance, it's she. (AL, you & Janet just pretend!)

Hmmmmm.......well.....ahem.......you know....most people around here shorten my name Janeen.....to Jan(too many letters in Janeen for the hillbilly tongue) If worse came to worse, I COULD be the Jan you refer to, just to keep things honest for all there......and I won't even bat an eyebrow if it's a king room instead.

(Don't hurt me Jan...it's all in the family you know since Rick and I are cousins......48 times removed...perfectly legal in this state)

Sounds like y'all are gonna have oodles of fun

sigh

For those of you who are staying in Evansville on Friday night (or passing through on Sunday morning or afternoon), you might try the Gerst Bavarian Haus on West Franklin Street. It's a German restaurant that, I believe, has a sister site in Nashville. As to what to eat: throw a dart at the menu. You can't go wrong. I really like the red cabbage. It's so sweet, it's almost like eating a dessert that's good for you.

Try The HillTop Tavern on the West side. Sorry I don't have exact address, but it's worth finding. It's an old German tavern with very good food--maybe a little low on atmosphere, though they do have a beautiful old oak bar.

We'd like to make it for a hot brown on Fri. night but don't know if we can get away to be there on time. I may have to bail out in Nashville and head to Owensboro on Sat. AM. We'll try though.

One Iron,
I am sure a lot will depend on the breaks we get with the weather. If you can get out of Atlanta "Mid-Morning" you will do fine getting getting into Louisville in plenty of time.

Folks, I've got somebad news and some good news.

The BAD news is that Lisa and Bob Lleechef and Zman won't be making the cross-country jaunt to join us for this session. The timing was not within the framework they had hoped for.

The GOOD news is that Lisa sent Me a CARE package. In addition to the Gen-U-Wine Skunk Skin(see photo below) to be used as a playtoy for the Scotties, she filled it with items like Reindeer Sausage, Smoked Halibut and Salmon (can), Salmon Jerky, Alaskan Berry Preserves, Salmon Seasoning, and Honey. Most of these items will appear as door prizes at the Moonlite BBQ.

Here is Mrs. Mayor demonstrating the use of an Alaskan Door Prize designed to educate our Duffy and Demi!!

Thank You Lleechef and Zman for contributing to the spirit of the Roadfood get-togethers. The label "Door-Prize" is an informal way of covering what in the old days would have been a "Hostess Gift" meant to enhance the session with a take-home memory of the event.
It seems like ages ago that we had that first meeting in SoCal in Feb 2004 (It was SuperBowl Sunday). Bushie had sent along a bunch of 'Real Sugar' Dr Pepper and some BBQ sauces with me on our trip West . The group that met that day had lots to talk about as they sampled the soda and other treats from "back East". The concept has kinda expanded from that. We sure have fun with it though. I am looking forward to seeing what local 'goodies' will show up for this meeting.

Just a month to go!!![/b]

Al, nobody is more disappointed than we are that we can't make it. I thought we could go to SoCal in February and then go from there to Owensboro but a large wedding that the restaurant is catering is bringing me back to Alaska on Jan 30.

Since the first meeting in 2004 we have received numerous CARE packages with all kinds of goodies so I thought the Glee Club Members would like to sample some products made in Alaska.

And I was SOOOOO looking forward to competing in "The Best Smile" contest!

Political Correctness Announcement

Due to the climate of political correctness now pervading America, Kentuckians, Tennesseans, and West Virginians will no longer be referred to as "HILLBILLIES."

You must now refer to us as APPALACHIAN-AMERICANS.

Thank you,

For anyone who hasn't discovered it, here is a link to the Moonlight BBQ aerial view on Google. You can play around with it to see what is close by, get directions, etc.

I thought you might like it.

Al,
Up there with food, film, cars and belles lettres, all in no particular order, dogs are among my chief passions. Those Scotties are just great.

I lost my Yorkie a little over a year ago. He was the king of the Yorkies, and he'd be the first one to tell you so. He was 12 years old and 18 lbs...about the size they were at the turn of the last century, before they started breeding them down like crazy.

He loved to eat, he loved to nap, and he loved going for a ride in the country, with a stop for some Roadfood, of course.

I'll share my dog story with you via email, to keep all these good folks from crying all night. Thanks for mentioning your Yorkie.

I am truly looking forward to our third annual BBQ gig with the Glee Club at the Huge Moonlite BBQ place. I am so sorry that Lleechef, Z and others will not be able to attend. Al has informed me that this list is now above 30 in attendance. It will be great to meet with all of you again.

So far the weather has given us a mild winter. We can hope that the trend will continue thru February.

I was asked about the reason why we are aiming for the dinner buffet rather than earlier for the luncheon, which is a bit less expensive. The response is twofold. 1. some of the folks are making a day-trip for the meal and need the time to make it to Owensboro by mid-afternoon. AND 2. The Dinner Buffet includes items not available to the lunch folks, Usually the Ribs, Oysters, catfish, and the wide variety of pies are evening items not found on the Lunch version of the famous buffet. Hope that answers the question.
Looks like about 31 days to the Hot Brown Sandwich Night!

I like BBQ but I am glad to hear that they have oysters.

To help get folks in the mood.... Here's aDRAFT copy of the Greeting/Name Tag under construction for the February BBQ Meeting. Suggestions are welcomed, but Space as you see is limited. The actual size of the card is 2" x 4". Names will be added in the box on the lower right.

Hey, if Al will send me the graphic I can scan it onto T-shirt iron-ons if folks want to buy them. (The materials ain't free, darn it!) Commercial would probably be better.

Hmm. Maybe I can download the pic and try it myself--maybe everybody could! I'll try and reply within a day or two.

I'm b-a-a-a-ck. Piece of cake. You can do it yourself; here's the way I did it (somebody doubtless knows a better oone!):
  • "Reply quoted" to Al's message with the graphic.
  • Copy the URL of the graphic, not including the img codes.
  • Open your graphics editor (I use Corel PaintShop Pro X).
  • Open the URL as a file.
  • Save it on your own HDD.
  • Manipulate as you see fit. You must reverse it, making a mirror image!
Additional info: While in PSP I rotated it 90° and mirrored it. Using my own wordprocessor, I opened a blank document and set the margins at 0.25 inches. Then I inserted the saved graphic. You can put one nice-sized one or two smaller ones on a letter-sized sheet. Finally, I printed it at whatever resolution the printer software selected.

"Piece of cake." Yeah, right. It took me four tries to get it all arranged and printed. I cleverly added my own signature, but if anybody wants a "clean" copy, I'll send it. But it would be best to wait until Al gets the final design, and gives me permission, to do anything.

Here's what I came up with:

I'd like a T-shirt, but remember, we big eaters usually need big t-shirts. (I like lots of room so a 4X would be great!) Would $15 do it? Maybe on black so the bbq sauce wouldn't show up so much!

It is with a heavy heart and (truly) tears in my eyes to tell everyone that due to some unforeseen obstacles, we are not going to be able to make it. I’m so sorry, and so disappointed. We were really looking forward to meeting everyone. Sigh…I’m so bummed…. Big time....
