Trip To Maine In July

In July I'll be making a trip to the east coast.  Among the cities I plan to be in is Bangor and Presque Isle Maine.  Does anybody have any recomendations of a good place to eat in those cities?  This is a Bus/Plane/cab  (maybe ferry or train I'm keeping my plans kind of loose) trip.  I don't have a car.  Any kind of food is fine.  I also might go to Augusta or Orono.

The Friar's Bakehouse in downtown Bangor is outstanding!

You said you won't have a car, but if you can bum a ride over the river, this place has always been worth a stop for me...

In Orono...and several other places around Maine... I like Pat's Pizza. Different, but good! It is a Maine chain, but don't hate them for that.

I plan on using a lot of cabs, (along as public transportation.)  I've been saving for this trip for four years.

If possible, go to the island of Isle au Haut, Maine. You get there by mail boat!

My friend, "The Lobster Lady", runs a concession trailer there and sells the best Lobster Rolls you'll ever eat.
She Winters in AZ and Summers in Maine.

I looked at a map. The boat to Isle Au Haut leaves from Stonington.
I need to see if any bus goes there.

My trip is almost over.  I go back to Detroit tommorrow.

I went to Friars and had a Lobster Roll, corn bread and some cookies.   Tony Bad was right it was really good.  It's run by actually monks.

I didn't make to Isle Au Hault.  However I made it to Madawaska, St Agatha, Callais, Machias, Boston, (which has a lot of Dunkin Donuts and a lot of traffic.) and a lot of other  places.  I'm kind of tired at this point.

Thanks for reporting back! The Friar's Bake Shop is run by Franciscan Friars, the same kind who smacked me around in high school. I enjoyed talking with them. It is really a unique place. Maybe you can offer more details when you catch up on your rest. Did you get any blueberry pie at Helen's in Machias?

Syrupmi, I hope you had a great time. Still time to make it to Pat's in Orono (UMO) my alma mater. It may have more locations now, but Orono is the ORIGINAL (Pat) Farnworths Cafe opened in 1931. Pat was a great man and his pizza (was) is unique (great in my opinion-yes, memories) and kept everybody going at UMO. The cafe has changed VERY little (still family involved I believe) since the old days and even has a dumb waitor to send pizza to the bar downstairs. Damn, I miss it.

I just got back to Michigan about 45 minutes ago.  I didn't make it to Helen's or Pat's Pizza.  My bus only stopped in Machias for about 5 minutes at a Irving/Circle K.  The Wickachee Diner in Callais is good though try the French Toast.

I'm allready planning my next trip to New England.

Maine, and most of New England, is really a great place to tour by car. Next time try to rent a car or travel with a designated driver so you can detour off the beaten path. You'll be happy you did!
