Trip to Rome/Syracuse, NY (WITH PICS!)-Part 3 Wed, 01/2/08 6:18 AM (permalink)
A while back in a thread here on Roadfood, people were talking about foods we missed by not living there anymore and a poster named ynotryme put me on a to a place called Liehs and Steigerwald in Syracuse, NY. The location I went to was at 4130 St. Rte. 31 (across from Great Northern Mall) in the Market Fair North Plaza in Clay, NY. Their phone number is 315-5652-4955 and the website is www.liehsandsteigerwald.com. It's a family run market that has been around since 1936. The original location is at 1857 Grant Blvd. in Syracuse, NY and the phone number there is 315-474-2171. It's a german meat market and they have just about any meat you can think of. Upon entering the store the aroma of sauerkraut and sausages was incredible. It would be a great place to pack a cooler for a weekend in the woods and the staff there couldn't have been more helpful. Thanks ynotryme!! Enjoy!!

Outside the store.

The board shows a lot of their homemade specialties.

These next three photos shows the wide array of meats they carry including a dizzying amount of bratwursts, homemade specialties, special/seasonal orders and a seemingly endless bounty of meats.

Notice in this photo that they make their own spiedies, too.

The next three shots are of the variety of meats and sausages in the cases. Honestly, I don't know the difference between them from sight alone, but I think they'd make for one fine backyard picnic.

Any place that makes their own perogies is a friend of mine and really says "roadfood" to me.

The reason I came here today. Ynotryme had told me about the Pepperettes. Think of a Slim Jim, only about 10 times better. I walked in and told the counter guy that someone had told me about the pepperettes, but I'd never had one before. he said "Well, I'll have to give you a sample". He was very helpful and eager to talk about it and the other things they make as well as answer any questions I had. It's a dried heef stick with crushed pepper flakes in it. Hard on the outside and chewy on the inside. It's not oily at all on the outside like a Slim Jim. The heat is there from the beginning, but it packs a bit of a punch about halfway through. I had to buy a milk to mitigate some of the heat. I loved it more with each bite and I could see them becoming addictive. Especially if you're on a road or camping trip and don't have time to stop for a meal.

Shot of a single pepperette.

Shot of a Landjaeger. Similar to the Pepperette, but flat shaped and milder, seasoned with garlic and caraway. I loved it as well and I like that there is a choice between spicy and mild (Pepperettes vs. Landjaeger).

Pepperettes are usually sold in pairs, attached as such. In the store, they're hung on a horizontal pole to dry. They get harder as they dry, but still stay chewy inside.

Reminds of the meat markets in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The pepperettes are like Polish kabanos.

It's hard to find any German restaurants or delis here in old world deprived San Diego.

Not really sure as I usually take the train when I go upstate. I don't think I-90 is much more then 20-30 mins away at most. From Rte. 31, you can take Rte. 481 South to 90 or 481 to 81 to 90.

the location in syracuse is about 5 minutes from I90(the thruway)exit 36 south on rt 81. I have the pepperettes shipped to me in Texas a few times a year. You have to call to order as the website doesn't offer that feature. A couple years ago their hot dogs were named the best in the country. All their meats are wonderful.

                        Roossy Dear,
But there are a few; you just have to hunt them. There's a European butcher shop out in an industrial park between Austell, Georgia and Powder Springs. I'll try to find particulars.
HERE IT IS! Patak Meat Products, Inc., 4107 Ewing Road, Austell, GA. 30106. Tel. (770) 941-7993. Their website is www.patakmeats.com
This is the best I can do for you, but it might actually be worth the trip. I've never been out there, so I can't give you firsthand information. You might well be able to talk me into going there with you sometime, though.

Bilyboy, I'm glad you went to the one on Rt. 31. I just noticed it over this past Christmas (it was the first time in a few years I had been to Great Northern Mall. I've been to the Grant Ave location upteen number of times. Although the outside of the Rt. 31 location look stale, the food inside looks just as I remember on Grant Ave.

Although Hofmann Coneys are my favorite local dog, Leih and Steigerwald's is my favorite regular hotdog in the 'cuse. (although the price has gone up since my last purchase)

Yeah, I really just stumbled upon it. I tried (not very hard) to find the one on Grant Blvd and didn't know where I was. My gf and I were on our way to Great Northern one day and I saw the name on a sign for the Market Fair Plaza and it just jumped out at me. I couldn't believe my luck. And they really couldn't have been nicer. The counterman chewed the fat with me for a bit. I brought some of the pepperettes and landjaegers back to NYC for some friends and they really loved them. I couldn't believe that they could get better after time, but they were amazing. I'll have to stop in again on my next trip upstate.
