A while back in a thread here on Roadfood, people were talking about foods we missed by not living there anymore and a poster named ynotryme put me on a to a place called Liehs and Steigerwald in Syracuse, NY. The location I went to was at 4130 St. Rte. 31 (across from Great Northern Mall) in the Market Fair North Plaza in Clay, NY. Their phone number is 315-5652-4955 and the website is
www.liehsandsteigerwald.com. It's a family run market that has been around since 1936. The original location is at 1857 Grant Blvd. in Syracuse, NY and the phone number there is 315-474-2171. It's a german meat market and they have just about any meat you can think of. Upon entering the store the aroma of sauerkraut and sausages was incredible. It would be a great place to pack a cooler for a weekend in the woods and the staff there couldn't have been more helpful. Thanks ynotryme!! Enjoy!!
Outside the store.
The board shows a lot of their homemade specialties.
These next three photos shows the wide array of meats they carry including a dizzying amount of bratwursts, homemade specialties, special/seasonal orders and a seemingly endless bounty of meats.
Notice in this photo that they make their own spiedies, too.
The next three shots are of the variety of meats and sausages in the cases. Honestly, I don't know the difference between them from sight alone, but I think they'd make for one fine backyard picnic.
Any place that makes their own perogies is a friend of mine and really says "roadfood" to me.
The reason I came here today. Ynotryme had told me about the Pepperettes. Think of a Slim Jim, only about 10 times better. I walked in and told the counter guy that someone had told me about the pepperettes, but I'd never had one before. he said "Well, I'll have to give you a sample". He was very helpful and eager to talk about it and the other things they make as well as answer any questions I had. It's a dried heef stick with crushed pepper flakes in it. Hard on the outside and chewy on the inside. It's not oily at all on the outside like a Slim Jim. The heat is there from the beginning, but it packs a bit of a punch about halfway through. I had to buy a milk to mitigate some of the heat. I loved it more with each bite and I could see them becoming addictive. Especially if you're on a road or camping trip and don't have time to stop for a meal.
Shot of a single pepperette.
Shot of a Landjaeger. Similar to the Pepperette, but flat shaped and milder, seasoned with garlic and caraway. I loved it as well and I like that there is a choice between spicy and mild (Pepperettes vs. Landjaeger).
Pepperettes are usually sold in pairs, attached as such. In the store, they're hung on a horizontal pole to dry. They get harder as they dry, but still stay chewy inside.
