Triple D does Kansas City BBQ

Last night, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives had the premiere of their Kansas City BBQ episode, which featured RJ's Bob-Be-Que & Johnny's Hickory House Bar-B-Q in Mission, Woodyard Bar-B-Que in Kansas City, Kansas and Smokin' Guns BBQ in North Kansas City, Missouri.

We had a watch party while enjoying BBQ from two of the restaurants on the show http://www.kansastravel.org/kansascitybbq/trippledkcbbq.htm

I've been hearing good things about Smokin' Guns.  I gotta get over there next time we're in town.

Didn't see the show, but I've been to all the others featured and they're all worth visiting at least once.

Smokin' Guns can be hard to visit. They close weekends and evenings.

Or they just decided that it is their business and they are going to work the hours they want to work and not when other people tell them to work.

Hot Doug's here in Chicago is very much like that.  Doug Sohn opened Our Town's first "Gourmet Sausage" store about six years ago.  He is only open until 4:00pm, weekdays and Saturdays.  No dinner hours in spite of the fact that he could do more than enough business to justify staying open.  Every day Doug is open there are lines of customers wrapped around the block, waiting to get in.  This in a city with literally hundreds, if not thousands of Hot Dog stands all over the metro area.

I don't think Smokin' Guns is experiencing that kind of success, but if they're making a living, saving for retirement, paying the bills and the payroll, and still closing for evenings and weekends, giving them more free time for family and just doing what they want to do, then I say, more power to 'em!

I can't say why they are closed evenings, but I understand they are closed weekends because they are at BBQ contests.

BTW another KC BBQ place is going on TV in a couple of weeks. Papa Bob's BBQ in Kansas City, Kansas near Bonner springs will be on Man Vs. Food on August 11.

Your write-up of PapaBob's is very good, and the photo of the food is great too. Nice job with the review. I would try it when we pass thru KC on I-70 sometime...if the publicity attending Man vs Food doesn't wreck the place.

    Thanks, Al!

We went to Johnny's for supper Sunday evening, wanting to try the chicken. But as we approached the door, there was a sign saying they were out of chicken. While we were being seated, the owner said they had sold 800 servings of chicken since Friday.

They were also out of onion rings and ran out of ribs just after we got our order in.

I would say that the TV coverage can make a difference!

This article in the today's Kansas City Star talks about the exposure http://www.kansascity.com/2010/07/27/2111879/food-network-exposure-rubbing.html

Al, didn't we have this conversation on another thread? (publicity hurting the very place they are reviewing)

Having grown up in western and eastern Kansas most of my childhood and teen years, I can attest to some of the great B.B.Q. to be had there. When I lived in KCMO I was often caught by the truant officer while eating at Arthur Bryant's.

I am more and more impressed with the food scene in KC as well as KC in general.  I wish I could spend a week there and get to experience all the food and culture.

Earl, please let me know if you make the trip. Perhaps I can join yuo for a cople of meals.

The restaurants in KC have come a very long way since I moved here in the mid 80s.

    Woodyard Bar-B-Que

Went to Woodyard Bar-b-que in Kansas city, Kansas.

My son ordered a turkey sandwich, turkey tasted like aldis deli-meat (gelatin-like).

Special on Saturday is a full slab of ribs for $13.50.  I guess we got the discount meat found what looked like a 2 "" tapeworm in my pork.  Wasn't real impressed ribs were kinda dry.  After I found the parasite in my order it pretty much ended my appetite.

Service wasn't that great,  waiters here should use numbers cause they brought us out the wrong plate at first.  They ask your name with the background music I misunderstood the waiter.

The one man band was about the best thing the place had going for them.

The restaurant itself is a dump.  Looks like someone bought two old shacks and got the bright idea to open a restaurant.  Surprised I didn't loose my muffler in the back parking lot, more like trenches than potholes.

This is the worst run restaurant I have ever visited.  I don't know how the hell it made Triple D's.

Their hours do vary in the summer due to contests. For more info go to www.smokingunsbbq.com
