Trying to Remember a Candy Sat, 09/11/04 1:10 PM (permalink)

Hope someone can help me here. I'm trying to remember the name of a candy that was sold some 40 or so years ago so if you don't know, I'd appreciate it if you could ask others who are about 50 yrs. or older as they may remember. I used to buy a box of candy that was on a rack with other boxes of candy at a store near me that no longer exists. The box was about 3" wide and about 2" high and about 1/4" deep and was a yellow box that had black and charcoal colors/writing on it. Inside the box were these square pillows of candy that were maybe 1/4" in diameter and had ridges on at least one side of them....it looked like someone had run the tines of a fork over them. They were light or medium gray in color. They had an odd taste that I can still remember to this day, and some of the kids hated them and used to laugh and call them "soapies" cause they said they tasted like soap (but "I" didn't think so). Not sure, but they "may" have been a breath candy. Somehow the name Heidi comes to mind........wasn't there a company named Heidi that used to make candy? Not sure if this is the company that made these candies. I'm from Philadelphia, PA, but this doesn't mean these candies weren't sold elsewhere. I wish there was a website that showed every candy ever made. I've done quite a bit of searching in the nostalgic candy department but haven't seen anything that looks like this candy, and I can't search any other way cause I don't remember what they were called. Hope someone remembers! Thanks!

I remember the exact candy you are talking about. They had a mild licorice flavor as I recall. The name Violets doesn't ring a bell, but Grampy seems pretty positive, so I'll defer to him.

        Bubbles,
Grampy is probably right. The Sen-Sen box was another color.
Now - along the same general lines - does anyone remember Tips? It was a green liquid and came in a little teeny bottle. They banned it at my high school when I was in like the 9th. grade; the hoody kids would sneak into the bathrooms and do it. Mr. Driver (the principal) would catch them and suspend them for 5 days every time.

        P. S. Beer, beer for old Athens High!
You bring the whiskey, I'll bring the rye! (I forget the rest of it.)

My grandfather would buy these and share them with me as a treat. And they were, if you liked the taste of soap.

Violets are not what I was thinking of.

The name Violets does not ring a bell....they don't look like what I'm talking about either. Please re-read my description of the little "pillows" of candy. However, I may try Violets just to see if they taste anything like the candy I'm talking about....if I can find them...and I'll let everyone know. They definitely were "not" Sen Sens which I hate. I tried these 2 websites in my search Nemis, but thanks anyway. I appreciate everyone's help.

                  Dearfolk,
Maybe the Quakers put them out of business - after all, they are pacifistic proponents of non-violets.
