Tuna Melt

So far I have not seen any discussion about this sandwich, one of my favorites. I don't see it on the menu much anymore. Does anyone know where a good melt can be found?

How about your recipie for tuna salad or your own melt?

    Most of the diners and delis in PA and NJ have a tuna melt on their menus. I like a tuna melt on rye with american or swiss cheese. Sometimes I'll order it with a tomato slice under the cheese.

    For some strange reason, I can't stand the taste of hot tuna !

    I guess to me, tuna is supposed to be cold or at least at room temperature and mixed with mayo

    You know, I've never had a tuna melt. In fact, I don't believe I've ever even seen one. Is it like a patty melt but with canned tuna instead of ground beef?

    It is usually on open faced sandwhich where tuna salad is placed on bread (rye sounds good!) and topped with cheese and toasted so the bread is crunchy and the cheese melts. It is sometimes topped with tomato.

    Although I do like grilled fresh tuna, don't give me hot canned tuna as in casserole yech!! However, in a tuna melt the tuna usually doesn't really get hot. The bread is usually toasted before the tuna is put on. Then the slice of cheese on top, it is just run under a broiler long enough to melt the cheese, if the tuna is real cold it won't get hot at all, generally just to room temp.
    Unfortunately finding a good tuna melt is becoming harder to do

    I rarely order "Tuna Melt" Sandwiches, but for some reason ordered one at a real Road Food find. "Don's Restaurant", located in the middle of the town of "Soap Lake, WA."[population 1275]. This is a full service restaurant. The sandwich was on Grilled on Thick sliced, , Sour Dough White Bread. The Tuna Salad was Solid Packed Albacore, with Mayo, diced celery, and some pickles. Cheese was Swiss, but the big surprise that made this so special was finely sliced, crispy grilled onions placed over the tuna, under the cheese. We ordered a extra sandwich, to share on our drive back to Seattle. I've prepared this at home to allocades.

    My mother had her own version of a tuna melt........minus the cheese. It was tuna mixed with celery, sliced black olives and Hellmann's mayo. It was then plunked between two slices of her homemade bread. She then dipped the entire sandwich in beaten egg, like a Monte Cristo, and fried it up in a pan, and knowing her it was probably in butter, not oil. I was only served this treat for Saturday lunch, and not very often either. Haven't eaten one in years and years but I do remember it was divine.

    Tuna Melt's abound in my neck of the wood's. I like mine on marble rye with a slice of swiss cheese and tomatoe. That and a side of homemade cole slaw and an iced coffee make a mighty fine lunch on the porch.

    Lone Star, if you are ever near one of the Texas Culver's, they serve an OK tuna melt with a tomato slice between two slices of sourdough bread. The only problem is that the bread really isn't crispy enough, but it is still a favorite of mine on their menu. I like the fact that they use mayo. Some places use Miracle Whip, but I think it makes the sandwich too sweet.

    I had a crab melt sandwich in San Francisco last year that was wonderful!

    Every couple of years I get an urge for a tuna melt. After eating it I realize, like scbuzz that I don't really like hot tuna salad so after the tuna melt I put together a tuna salad sandwich and then I'm happy. Will i never learn?

    Love tuna melts / please leave out the celery / if I want crunchy tuna I add sweet onion.

    The first tuna melt I ever had was on a weekend church retreat when I was a teenager. The retreat was held at a lakeside lodge in the central piedmont of North Carolina. The sandwiches were toasted over an open fire. Afterwards, our chaperone went to bed and left an equal number of 12 year old boys and girls alone to dance to the sounds of the Embers and Little Eva and to play spin the bottle.

    It remains one of my favorite sandwiches, but none can compare with that first one.

    For my tuna salad, I use canned or freshly grilled tuna with lots of Duke's mayonnaise, French's mustard, chopped onion, celery salt, and enough black pepper to make it burn just a little. For variety, I sometimes add a chopped boiled egg.

    I thought Hot Tuna was a highly underated band. They never got the play they should have.

    Inspired by this thread although I usually don't like tuna except for yellow fin steaks, I just had a very tasty tuna melt and cream soda at a true Manhattan road food place, "Eisenberg's Sandwich", across from the Flatiron building on 5th avenue between 22nd and 23rd streets (174 Fifth Ave). Not a pretty place (but what good roadfood establishment is). Newspaper clippings in the window tout their tuna as the best in NYC, and they call themselves the gathering spot for cabbies. I will go back to sample some of the rest of their interesting menu (Kosher Jumbo Franks & Beans on Monday and Wednesday, Meat Loaf with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy on Tuesday and Thursday plus a wide variety of sandwiches and soups).

    I worked for awhile at Rochester Institute of Technology and their cafeteria made this great sandwich...get this..."The Ike and Tina Tuna"! Basically it was a big scoop of tuna salad shaped into a patty on the grill, turned when it got crispy, covered with tomato, cheese and bacon and served on a grilled roll. Delish!
    Obviously, I'm not one of those who have a problem with hot tuna, musical or otherwise!

    Here at our house, tuna melts are made on rye bread, the darker the better and grilled with the tuna salad on em'

    Wife uses a slice of red onion and melts hot pepper cheese on them, I have the same with a slice or two of tomato.

    Out tuna salad is made with finely chopped red onion and celery and salt and pepper. The matrix is a good quality brown coarse mustard and some mayo. We don't use much so as to keep the stuff kinda "dry".

    Makes great wraps, too. Same way, w/ the red onion, hot cheese and the tuna in a flour tortilla served cold.

    I make Tuna melts on a toasted English muffin. Then I melt the cheese, sometimes American, sometimes monterey jack over the tuna.

    We love tuna melts at our house, the only way my kids will eat tuna. I had a good tuna melt a few years back in Manhattan at some deli near the Marriott Marquis waiting for my daughter to finish an interview/audition at NYU. It was on an english muffin with a inc cream scoop of tuna salad and american cheese open face, very different and highly enjoyable.
    Needless to say she did not get into NYU , is happy at UVM instead- gotta go back for that tuna melt sometime though

    Pappa Charlies Deli in Williamstown, MA has several hot tuna sandwiches on their menu:

    Richard Thomas Tuna, melted swiss, mushrooms, olives
    Oscar Homolka Melted cheese and tuna
    Avocado Montalban Tuna, melted provolone, guacomole, sprouts, tomatoes

    In grand deli tradition, they have lots of sandwiches named after actors and "local heroes."

    On a hunch, I just checked out the Friendly's website and one of their SuperMelt sandwiches is "Tuna Salad SuperMelt: Albacore tuna salad, melted American cheese and tomato slices on grilled sourdough."
    Not that I'm advocating Friendly's particularly, but here in New England they're sort of omnipresent.

    OK,
    Almost a year later this topic comes up again. Apparently history does repeat itself.

    Hot Tuna is still an under-appreciated band.

    Any band that is formed by such greats as Jack Casady and Jorma Kauknonen
    should be revered.

    And as to a ROADFOOD connection I am listening to their 1972 album, BURGERS, which would also classify for the "What are you listening to now thread".

    I like tuna melts, IF the tuna salad does not include sweet pickle relish. Gotta be dill relish for me to like it.

    Didn't Papa John Creech used to play with Hot Tuna?

    As a native NJ boy, tuna melts are one of my favorites. I think there is a tendency to put too much tuna on them though. Some places I can literally take off about two cans worth and still have enough for the sandwich.
