Tuna sandwiches & salads, mustard or mayo? Sun, 02/15/09 10:23 PM (permalink)

I don't use mayo for anything, I prefer using any number of different types of mustards when prepping my tuna sandwich or salad, ditto for ham, chicken, salmon or turkey sandwiches and salads. How about potato salad? Don't  you prefer Southern with mustard better than with mayo. Shoot I even use mustard on cole slaw and macaroni salads. I guess I am a mustardophile and a mayo hater.

i have never been a big fan of mayo. In fact, i do my salad dressings more with Mediterrean flair/flavour than mayo or mustard.

I like mustard in my sammies more than mayo, i have a variety of mustards to suit the flavours and such.

Tuna salad? Has to be mayo or miracle whip. Same with chicken and turkey. Potato salad has both.

I like both, sometimes together, but mustard on a BLT does not work for me.

i like mustard in both my potato salad and my tuna sandwiches. I like the extra tang it gives to both.

Mayo has its place, and its wonderful.
American Tuna salad is wonderful with mayo, celery, onions.
Italian tuna sandwich, thats different.  Italian tuna in olive oil, on a roll with more olive oil, lemon, onions, red pepper.  This is delicious.

I use mayo in the tuna salad, but generally spread mustard on one of the bread slices.

And for potato salad, I use both: 1 part mustard to 6 parts mayo.

Come to think of it, we have a deli here that makes their tuna salad with pickle relish and nothing else.  Very unique.

Fix up your mayonnaise to taste.
For a large jar of Hellmann's, add abt. 1-2 TBS wet mustard, 1-2 TBS. paprika, juice of 1 lemon, some dashes of Tobasco, 1 clove garlic, pressed.
                        Mix well.
Replace in jar and keep in refrigerator.

I disagree you almost have to have mayo in your tuna, chicken and turkey salads and no mayo on a BLT would just be wrong. I also love mustard as well and regularly have 5-7 different kinds on hand to suit my mood. I think everything is just the right combonation of both.

Tuna salad, Hellmans, a little to moisten it, then Kens Ceasar dressing, diced celery, dill relish...try it you'll like it!
Potato salad, Red potatoes, mayo, mustard diced red onions, bacon and celery, celery seed, salt, pepper.

If you want to spice it up try some wasabi sauce or make some wasabi mayo.  It is very good

Mayonnaise - one of my favorite things!

Thanks to this thread I’ve gotten a lot of ideas about mayo, mustard and other combinations - even Wasabi!

Tuna salad & potato salad with only mustard? Those are new ones on me.

To me some foods demand mayonnaise. Tuna salad is one of them. When I make tuna salad I always use mayonnaise - Hellmann’s for the best egg flavor.

My favorite tuna – mayo combo is a pasta salad using Rotini or Rotelle pasta.

I make a whole 1-pound box and add 2 cans water & 2 cans oil tuna. If I want more tuna flavor I don’t drain the oil from the tuna-in-oil cans. Mix to distribute the tuna and oil. Add mayonnaise and chopped onion, chopped green pepper, and chopped flat parsley. Then add granulated garlic too taste. Add more mayo as needed. You can either mix in Paprika or just finish the bowl with a good sprinkling of Paprika on top as you would a deviled egg.

The next time I make this salad I think I’ll reserve a portion of the mixture before adding the garlic and add some of my canned dry Wasabi to it. Sounds interesting for sure. Then again, a typical Soy Sauce/Wasabi mix added to the pasta and tuna fish instead of the mayonnaise could be interesting as well. Hmmmmmmmm.

Hmmm, my grilled Ahi tuna sandwich uses home made tartar sauce, made with mayonaise.

I make my tuna salad with mayo or Miracle Whip, chopped Fuji or Delicious apples, sweet pickle relish, and chopped hard boiled eggs. Sometimes, I also use chopped pecans or walnuts.

I also use mayo or MW in my potato salad, although my mother (from Mississippi) always used a little bit of mustard, in addition to the mayo, in hers. Not sure I could eat a BLT with mustard. :)
