Tutti Frutti?

Tutti frutti is among the most fabled ice cream flavours of all time yet I've never seen it in the hard ice-cream format in Canada!

Can anyone tell me where tutti-frutti hard ice cream can be found in the Toronto area - say within the quadrilateral defined by Detroit, Tobermory (Ontario), Montreal and Buffalo?

All I've found in the seven years since I posted is a soft ice cream booth in the Food Building at the Canadian National Exposition in the late summer that carried tutti-frutti among its several dozen flavours. The tutti-frutti was indeed delicious but sadly the booth has been gone for at least two years now.

So has anyone else discovered tutti-frutti ice cream in their own neck of the woods?

I once lamented the loss of tutti-frutti here years ago. It was so popular in my childhood in the 50's....haven't seen it in 30-40 years...I'd be interested if anyone has spotted it ANYWHERE!!!!

We should march to and picket the offices of the American Dairy Producers' Association until those food fascists reestablish tutti-frutti in every grocery store freezer and ice cream stand. Enough of nothing but dozens of variants of chocolate! We shall overcome! Join the  National Association for the Reestablishment of Tutti Frutti today!

You ask about Tutti Fruitti in Canada.  If you reside close to Toronto, scroll down on the like I have attached and you will find a gelato place that still serves your ice cream.

I always thought it was a joke--a Chico Marx gag.  I'm amazed the stuff even existed.

I phoned the two places in Toronto mentioned in the thread. Both are Italian places that serve their own home made gelato, which is closer to sherbet than to ice cream.  One has a flavour that they make on occasion with a name that seems to be Italian for tutti frutti. The other may have something very much like tutti frutti, but under a different name.

But Lindy Hop's in New Jersey may have tutti frutti ice cream:

So lo and behold I found some tutti frutti ice cream at the local Freshco supermarket! Very curiously it wasn't in the ice cream freezer, but rather in the ethnic Indian foods section of the store. The name brand was Reena's, and it was made by Deep Foods of Union, New Jersey.

I picked up a pint. Well it was awful. It had tiny flecks of orange peel or some fruit in it that were somewhat bitter and the overall flavour wasn't to my liking. Moreover, the texture was far waxier than that of any ice cream I typically buy. I didn't like it at all and ended up putting it out in a bowl for the raccoons in the neighbourhood.

Actually I can't remember ever having tutti-frutti ice cream as a kid. I just thought it had to be really good since I really like burgundy cherry, orange, grape, lime and lemon ice cream. Well this tutti-frutti I certainly didn't like.

It was really good. It was like a vanilla based ice cream with fruit cocktail throughout it. Quite tasty, if memory serves, I would think it would be popular today with all that fruit!

It was Breyers brand in this area...years ago. Breyers is for the squirrels now.

Some people in these parts also call spumoni tutti frutti.

A quality vanilla ice cream with some favorite fruitcake mix-ins and tutti frutti away.

It didn't come with dried fruitcake fruit, but soft fruit cocktail as I remember it!

Yep. During that time period fruit cocktail was a very popular ingredient...in the US.

    Tutti outside that time...

In 1957 a whole episode of The Ozzie and Harriet show was built around Ozzie's search for Tutti Fruitti Ice Cream. I guess it wasn't that easy to find back in the 50's either:
Cool tune about the treat, at about 5:35:

I never watched an episode of Ozzie & Harriet.

Ozzie was born in Jersey City. I would never have guessed that. Now I have to watch it.

Sent me off to look for Tutti Frutti (all rooty), got lost with Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard and the boys for about 2 hours.
