" 'Twas the Night Before RoadFood. " -- A Tale of Good Eating and Cheer.
" 'Twas the Night Before RoadFood."
‘Twas the night before RoadFood, and everything was grand,
Barbecue pits were smoking, all across the Southland.
Sausages were hung by the fire, at Kreuz Market with care,
In hopes that Smitty’s customers would wander over there.
The RoadFooders were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Allie’s honey-dipped donuts danced in their heads.
And Mama at her Du-Par’s, and I at my Pann’s,
Had settled on the fact that we are both fans.
When out on a picnic bench, there was such a clatter,
The ghost of Pete Jones brought out a barbecue platter.
No register at the counter, just a small mound of cash,
Tore into our eastern NC ‘cue, we were finished in a flash.
The new-fallen snow reflected the light of a neon glow,
From the best Mexican we’ve had, at El Indio.
When, what to my RoadFooding eyes should appear,
But Roast Grill chili dogs, and a frosty root beer.
With roast pork and sharp provolone, never too quick,
I knew in a moment, it must be DiNic’s.
More cheese, Hatch chiles, it’s Bobcat Bite!
He whistled, he shouted, give me a Maid Rite!
Now, Louie Mueller’s! Now, Frank Pepe’s! Now, Al’s #1 Beef, and Flo’s!
On Ted’s! On Joensy’s! On Lenny & Joe’s!
Sippin’ sweet tea on the porch, and enjoying it all!
Now feast away, feast away, feast away all!
